``Friends'' led off the evening for NBC with a 20.3/32. It was followed by ``The Single Guy,'' which lost some of its lead-in with an 18.3/28. ``Seinfeld'' got back all of those viewers and more and scored with the week's highest rating, 25.7/37. Newcomer ``Suddenly Susan'' scored a 22.9/34, and the first half-hour of ``The Pretender,'' which is holding ``ER's'' slot, earned a 19/30. The second half-hour got a 17.8/30 for an average of 18.4/30.

Based on the metered market data, NBC's Thursday lineup has delivered five of the top seven shows for the week to date. ``Seinfeld,'' ``Suddenly Susan'' and ``Friends'' are one, two and 3. ``The Pretender'' is sixth and ``The Single Guy'' seventh.

As for Wednesday, NBC had the best new program on, CBS had the biggest returning star, but ABC, buoyed by returning shows ``The Drew Carey Drew Allison Carey (born May 23, 1958) is an American comedian, actor, and game show host. After serving in the U.S. Marines and making a name for himself in stand-up comedy, Carey eventually gained popularity starring on his own sitcom, The Drew Carey Show  Show'' and ``Grace Under Fire,'' won the night, according to the national Nielsen averages.

NBC's ``Men Behaving Badly Men Behaving Badly is a British comedy, which first broadcast in 1992 on the ITV network, however moved to BBC One (and a later timeslot) from the third series onwards. It was written and created by Simon Nye. ,'' at 9:30 p.m., was the highest-rated new show Wednesday night with an 10.5 rating and a 16 share, but it lost its time period to ``The Drew Carey Show,'' which came away with a 12.5/19. ``Carey'' was up to the comedic level it set last year and probably didn't scare off any viewers.

CBS took the night's first hour, ABC the second and NBC the third.

CBS' ``The Nanny,'' topped ABC's ``Ellen,'' 10.9/19 to 8.9/15. ``Wings'' got a 7.8/13.

At 8:30 p.m., CBS' ``Pearl,'' airing its second time of the week, nipped ABC's ``Townies This article is about the TV show. For the slang term, see townie.

Fox's ``Beverly Hills, 90210,'' received an 8.0/13 from 8 to 9 p.m. and ``Party of Five,'' scored a 6.7/10 from 9 to 10 p.m.

But ABC's ``Grace Under Fire'' was the runaway winner at 9 p.m. with the biggest number of the night - 13.1/21.

NBC took over at 10 p.m. as ``Law & Order'' got a 13.8/23, compared to a 12.1/20 for ABC's ``PrimeTime Live.''

For the night, ABC got an 11.4/19, NBC a 9.6/16, CBS a 9.4/26 and Fox a 7.4/12.
