THRONGS FINISH MAIL CHORE, BUT THERE'S TIME FOR MORE.

Byline: Harrison Sheppard Staff Writer

VAN NUYS - Sam La Foca waited in line about 45 minutes Monday afternoon at the Van Nuys post office to mail Christmas presents to relatives in Oregon - but he didn't mind.

The Canyon Country man shrugged it off. ``What's Christmas without waiting in endless lines?''

Monday was the busiest day of the year for the U.S. Postal Service The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) processes and delivers mail to individuals and businesses within the United States. The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs. , with 40 million packages and letters expected to move through Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  alone. The line at the Van Nuys post office Monday afternoon was about 25 customers long, but moved steadily, with a full contingent of five clerks at the window and a lobby director to answer questions.

Procrastinators have until Wednesday if they plan to send packages or letters by standard mail and want to be certain they will arrive within the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Early courier systems for government use were organized in the Persian Empire under Cyrus, in the Roman Empire, and in medieval  spokeswoman Terri Bouffiou.

``This year I'm saying mail by the 20th and you can rest assured - barring a huge snowstorm or something like that - that your priority mail packages and Christmas cards will get across by Saturday the 23rd,'' she said.

After that, depending on the distance, packages may not arrive in time for Christmas, although mail sent within Southern California typically takes only one to two days. Complicating matters this year is a Christmas mail delivery season that is a day shorter than usual because Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, Bouffiou noted.

But there's still time if customers opt for the more expensive overnight Express Mail, including deliveries on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. In the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

FedEx will deliver packages on Saturday and Sunday in its overnight service, but there is no delivery Sunday in its slower, less expensive ground service, spokesman Jim McCluskey said.
