Odds and ends from around the Valley:

Whenever there's a horse show in town, it's always the young, sleek, gorgeous steeds grabbing all the attention. What about those slow, old, patient-as-a-saint, swaybacked sway·back

Well, Saturday, the also-rans are grabbing the roses. The fourth annual Day of the Horse, sponsored by the Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council, is honoring three faithful therapy horses for their years of service mainly to handicapped and disadvantaged kids.

From Ravensview Ranch in La Tuna Canyon, there's Shoshone, pushing 30. From Wallace Ranch in Lake View Terrace, there's Durango, 16. And from Dusty's Riders Program in Glendale, there Dusty himself, almost 14.

``Between them, these guests of honor represent thousands of hours of patient service helping hundreds of children over the years,'' said Deb Baumann of the Foothill Trails council.

The Day of the Horse, a free event, will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday at Gibson Ranch, 9655 Wentworth St., Shadow Hills. Call (818) 486-0712 or see www.dayofthehorse.org.

For most people, a walk in the park is a pretty ordinary thing. But for those with disabilities, it can be so challenging that it never happens, says Bryan McQueeney, executive director of Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship horsemanship: see equestrianism.

Also on Saturday, 35 horseback riders with disabilities will get their first chance to leave their controlled environment and enjoy a real trail ride. They'll be joining the Santa Monica Mounted Police at their second annual Walk-Ride A Thon at Paramount Ranch, 2903 Cornell Road, Agoura Hills.

The riders will mount up in the old Western town set used in the TV show ``Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman is multi-Emmy Award winning western/dramatic television series in the United States, created by Beth Sullivan. The event is open to the public, but participants are asked to bring their own horse or hiking shoes for the two-hour trail ride/walk.

It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted to support the nonprofit Ride On program.
