And all three Glendale Unified high school seniors are in the running to get money for college from the National Merit Scholarship Program The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic scholarship competition for recognition and college scholarships administered by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a privately funded, not-for-profit organization. The program began in 1955. , after having been selected from among 16,000 students nationwide.

``It feels really nice to be recognized for something to do with academics,'' Bagwell said. ``Because mostly the news you hear is negative kind of things about high school, it's kind of nice that they recognize students for certain achievements.''

Based on their performance on a Preliminary SAT test last year, the three Glendale students were selected as semifinalists in the Illinois- based National Merit Scholarship Corp.'s competition.

``History is really the only reason that advances in math or science or language are ever made,'' she said. ``Because you have to look back in history and figure out the right forms of government and stuff so all of your knowledge has the right environment to grow.''

NMSC conducts two annual competitions for recognition and scholarships--the National Merit Scholarship Program, which is open to all  will announce the finalists and scholarship recipients next year. In addition to the $2,500 scholarships, participating corporations and universities also provide scholarships ranging from $500 to more than $2,000 a year.

A total of 8,200 students will receive some form of scholarship through the program, which receives no government funding.
