THREE MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT FLIES TRAPPED IN PASADENA AREA
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Cooperative Medfly Project officials today announced the discovery of three Mediterranean fruit flies in the Pasadena area.
Three male Medflies were found Sept. 15, 1992 in a Jackson trap located in a fig tree in the 3100 block of Doyne Rd. The three fly finds are within the already established agricultural quarantine boundaries, approximately one mile north-northwest of an earlier find on Coronet Ave. in Pasadena. A total of 11 Medflies have been trapped in the northeast Pasadena area since Sept. 8, 1992.
Fruit cutting and intensified trapping will begin immediately in the area surrounding the new fly find. Project officials said foliar applications of malathion-bait, using backpack sprayers, will begin in a 200 meter radius of the fly find after homeowners are notified. No aerial treatment is being considered at this time.
Residents in the area are urged to respect the agricultural quarantine and continue to cooperate with trapping and fruit cutting efforts. Not moving home-grown fruit from the property is the best way to prevent the spread of Medfly. Anyone finding maggots in fruit should contact the Medfly Project at 213-626-4820 or 800-491-1899.
