THREE EARN AWARD FOR VOLUNTEER WORK.


Three young people have worked to help to make the world around them a better place.

Encino sisters Jocelyn and Paige Ryder, and Bobby Gibbons from Sherman Oaks were honored with the Congressional Award Bronze Medal for voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and travel planning.

The recognition commemorates 200 hours of service to the community in a program designed to teach participants responsibility, citizenship and organization.

They were commended by Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Woodland Hills, at a ceremony last month in his Woodland Hills office.

Steve Meier has received the Ralphs Kroger Community Service Award for his volunteer efforts with the California Emergency Mobile Patrol.

The North Hollywood resident works as a manager at Ralphs grocery store in Glendale.

Sylmar resident Diane Gross is attending a workshop in Bethesda, Md., where she is receiving training to serve a three-year term on the state board of the Self-Help Hard of Hearing People organization. The group serves individuals whose ability falls between normal hearing and deafness.

She has been a member of the local chapter for 20 years.

Two Valley students have been given $750 scholarships by the Federal Employees Education and Assistance Fund.

Phillip Song of Chatsworth, is the son of Kyung Song, an employee of the Postal Service in Pasadena. Lawrence Hsu of Woodland Hills, was also a recipient. His mother, Meichin, is an Internal Revenue Service employee.

Both have an extensive list of personal achievements at school and in the community.

Another student winning commendation, Jonathan Elkin, a junior at Agoura High School Agoura High School is a four-year high school, freshman-senior, in Agoura Hills, California, United States. It is the largest high school in the Las Virgenes Unified School District, with an enrollment of approximately 2,400 students. , wrote a 300-word essay about why he has chosen to stay away from drugs and alcohol. He won a $1,000 scholarship in the NO-ADdiction Campaign.

The award is sponsored by the nonprofit parent company Solar Cosmetics Labs, which donates funds not used for advertising for drug- and alcohol-free promotional campaigns.

And two other students can tout their accomplishments.

Local agencies are assisting the community in charitable ways.

The San Fernando Valley Assistance League has received $3,000 from the Southland Regional Association of Realtors toward the purchase of dictionaries for third-grade students at Montague Charter Academy in Pacoima.
