SUN VALLEY - The Daily News All-Star softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  game figures to be a fine showcase for Santa Clarita-area talent as three of the East team's four pitchers - Valencia's Christian Ross, Saugus' Kyla Sullivan and Hart of Newhall's Robyn Kontra - hail from the Foothill League.

Ross, a left-hander who has committed to Kansas, is scheduled to start. Kontra figures to pitch two or three innings, and Sullivan is scheduled to be the closer, according to according to
prep.

Bell caught Stone's eye during during an East team practice Wednesday evening at Village Christian.

 out of the ball,'' Stone said. ``I knew that, but what's really surprised me is how great her hands are on defense.''

--Bell ready to ring some up: Bell is scheduled to participate in a pregame home-run contest beginning at 2 p.m. < Other East contestants will bee Crescenta Valley's Amanda Peek, Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks' Cori Blanton, Highland of Palmdale's Shannon Doepking and Village Christian's Laura Stone.

The team that hits the most home runs gets to be the home team during the game, and the individual who hits the most wins a bat.

Last year, Valencia's Danyale Peterson won the home-run contest. She played at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  this season.

--Quite a warmup for Ross; Prior to the East team's practice Wednesday, Ross competed in a much-anticipated campus softball showdown between Valencia's softball and baseball teams.

The softball team won 5-3, though Jared Clark, the Foothill League's career home run leader, hit a home run off Ross.

``Ah, that's OK. I wasn't even throwing hard,'' Ross said with a smile.

--Color matching: The All-Star event gives players from league powers Valencia, Saugus and Hart an opportunity to play on the same team after four years of being fierce rivals.

``It will be fun,'' Ross said. ``Kyla and I are actually good friends. Plus, I've know Robyn Kontra forever, and I've played with Jen before, too.''

--Whitcomb weighing options: Whitcomb is the only local All-Star player who has yet to sign a Division I scholarship, but she said she's weighing offers from Cal State Northridge and Sacramento State, along with a couple of out-of-state universities.

``I definitely want to play some place,'' she said.
