THQ BUYS RIVAL; GAME MAKER IN MTV DEAL.

 Inc. said Friday it will pay about $13 million to acquire Pacific Coast Power & Light Co., a small Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  game developer.

. Company founder Don Traeger will continue to manage the firm as its president, THQ said, and Dennis Harper will remain its vice president of product development.

 to develop and publish MTV Sports video games. The four-year contract gives THQ rights to the MTV property for all current and future game platforms from Sony, Nintendo and Sega, and for personal computers. The first games are due out this winter.

THQ also said it signed an agreement with the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association to publish and distribute rodeo games for the PlayStation and PCs worldwide.

None of Friday's news was enough to lift THQ shares in the face of a wide sell-off of stocks that sent most indexes down sharply. THQ shares fell 6.12 percent, or $1.6875, to $25.875.
