Byline: KIRBY LEE Special to the Daily News

NEWBURY PARK - There's no argument about Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  championship after a 42-21 victory over host Newbury Park in a Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County.  (7-2 overall, 5-2 Marmonte) solidified their standing as the league's No. 3 entry in next week's Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

The loss dropped Newbury Park (4-6) into a three-way tie for fourth place with Royal (5-5) and Agoura (5-5) at 3-4 in the league. Royal, which defeated Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  on Thursday, is headed to the playoffs by virtue of a coin toss held by the schools' principals earlier in the week.

Newbury Park and Royal must wait until Sunday to see if they make the postseason as at-large teams.

Panthers coach Geroge Hurley didn't reveal the outcome of the coin flip to his team until after Friday's game.

``When you play Thousand Oaks in a crosstown rivalry, it doesn't matter if its for first place or last place,'' Hurley said. ``We didn't get the job done.''

Lister did his part in the first half with 179 yards and four scores to help Thousand Oaks, which opened a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and a 35-14 halftime lead.

Rivalries and league standings weren't the only motivation for Lister and his teammates.

The Lancers dedicated the game to defensive end Seth Kassis, whose father is stricken with brain cancer. Kastis, a senior, did not play Friday.
