THOUSAND OAKS LIBRARY CATALOG GOES ON LINE.

Bookworms who like to prowl through the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  Library catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. B.C.  now can do it via personal computer.

The library's computerized catalog - TOMCAT - is only a modem call away, giving residents access to title, author and subject listings from the comfort of home.

Steve Brogden, the library's deputy director, said that making the computerized catalog accessible from personal computers is a service more library systems are offering to expand access for patrons.

"It's not uncommon. It certainly could attract patrons," Brogden said.

The library's entire 300,000-volume collection is available on the computerized catalog. Most of the books are held at the Main Library, 2400 Willow Lane, with the balance of the collection at the Newbury Park Branch, 2331 Borchard Road.

Although books can't be reserved from home, patrons with reference information in hand can get books without having to wait for time on library computers.

Brogden said the one request library officials make of patrons is to get out of the computerized catalog as quickly as possible because others may be trying to log on.

Brogden offered the following answers to common questions about accessing the computerized catalog from home:

What kind of modem should I use?

Any modem will work, but it will only work if you dial in at speeds of 14,400 baud baud (bôd, bōd), measure of the rate at which signals are transmitted over a telecommunications link. It is equivalent to the number of elements or pulses transmitted in one second, e.g.  or less.

Does it make any difference what kind of modem software I use?

Most kinds of commercial communications software (communications, software) communications software - Application programs, operating system components, and probably firmware, forming part of a communication system. These different software components might be classified according to the functions within the Open Systems  are compatible with TOMCAT.

What settings do I use?

Data bits: 8; Parity: N; Stop bits: 1; Terminal Emulation Using software in a desktop machine to make it perform like a hardware terminal. The emulated terminal is typically in the VT100-500 family, designed originally by Digital Equipment. : ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  or VT100.
