THOUSAND OAKS CAN'T GET A CALL OR THE VICTORY : UPLAND 2, T.O. 0.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Upland got the call and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  took the fall.

A controversial play at second base proved crucial in Thousand Oaks High School's 2-0 Southern Section Division I semifinal softball loss to Upland Tuesday at Greenbelt Park Greenbelt Park, located in Greenbelt, Maryland, is managed by the United States National Park Service. Second-base umpire Rob Pettingil ruled that Thousand Oaks shortstop Kristin Combe combe

The play was one of three questionable calls that went against Thousand Oaks.

``I had the out,'' Combe said.

Thousand Oaks pitcher Jennifer Sharron's brilliant season ended one game short of the Southern Section championship. Sharron (24-4) allowed five hits and struck out nine. Upland had just one runner in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  outside the fourth inning.

``We didn't get the calls and there is nothing we can do,'' Sharron said. ``But we can't blame the umpires. We tried hard, but we are disappointed. You can talk about the shoulda-woulda-couldas all day, but one team wins and one team loses. This game is part talent but part luck, too.''

Thousand Oaks coach Gary Walin said he was proud of his team but angry at the umpires.

``This is an embarrassment,'' Walin said. ``The CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  (Southern Section) is supposed to send the best officials for a game like this. I wanted the kids to decide the game, but the calls decided the outcome. It's tough to swallow.''

Confronted by reporters, second-base umpire Pettingilstood by his call. ``I'll tell you my name, but it doesn't matter because (Combe) never touched the base,'' Pettingil said.

Sara Farnworth (28-4) went the distance for the win. The Lancers (27-4) had runners in scoring position three times, but Farnworth - who scattered seven hits and struck out six - was able to bear down when she had to. The two-time All-Southern Section performer now has 73 wins.

``We knew this was going to be a difficult game,'' Upland coach Ed Ulloa said. ``Maybe we got the breaks, but we were lucky enough to get a hit at the right time. That was the difference.''

Jenna Allen had two hits for the Lancers, including a two-out single in the seventh to put the tying run aboard, but Teverbaugh's groundout ended it.
