THORDAL-CHRISTENSEN NEW DIRECTOR OF ROYAL DANES.


COPENHAGEN--A surprise candidate was announced as the new director of Royal Danish Ballet Royal Danish Ballet, one of the oldest major ballet companies, established at the opening of Denmark's Royal Theater in Copenhagen in 1748. The company was developed over the centuries by three great masters.  in a press conference on June 8. Aage Thordal-Christensen, a thirty-three-year-old Danish soloist with the company, was selected over more famous applicants such as New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946.  principal Nikolaj Hubbe, former RDB See Oracle Rdb.

The tall, boyish-looking Thordal-Christensen looked proud and happy when the board of the Royal Theatre presented him as "a legitimate child of the theater, young and visionary." He did not say much, aside from explaining that he hopes to establish peace and stability in the company after its last five turbulent years with Peter Schaufuss and Maina Gielgud as directors.

Thordal-Christensen has no experience as a director. He graduated from the school of RDB in 1982 but left the company in 1985. The following year he danced with NYCB NYCB New York City Ballet

 and from 1986 to 1992 he danced with Pacific Northwest Ballet The Pacific Northwest Ballet is a ballet company and based in Seattle, Washington in the United States. Founded in 1972 as part of the Seattle Opera and named the Pacific Northwest Dance Association, it broke away from the Opera in 1977 and took its current name in 1978. . In 1992 he returned to Copenhagen as a soloist. Although he was brought up in the Bournonville tradition, he is not an experienced or typical Bournonville dancer. However, he did state that he considers Bournonville's works to be the main profile of the company--a profile to be supported by works by George Balanchine Noun 1. Balanchine
 and by Peter Martins, who will continue to choreograph for the company.

Thordal-Christensen's wife, former NYCB ballerina Colleen Neary, will also join the company as first ballet master. Johnny Eliasen will remain in his five-year position as assistant director, "helping Aage to get to know the job as director." Thordal-Christensen was offered a three-year contract.
