THOMSON SELLS BANKWATCH RATINGS SERVICE; ACQUIRES ARGENTINIAN PUBLISHER.


The Thomson Corp. (Toronto, ON), through its Thomson Financial Thomson Financial

A major provider of information, analytical tools, and consulting services to the financial community. The firm, a division of Thomson Corporation, is best known to investors for its First Call segment, which publishes consensus earnings
 division, has agreed to sell its BankWatch ratings business to Fimalac (Paris), the French diversified diversified (di·verˑ·s  services group.

Following the completion of regulatory approval, the bank ratings services Ratings Service

 offered through BankWatch will become a part of Fitch (London), Fimalac's international ratings agency. In exchange, Thomson will hold a 3.4% minority interest in Fitch. Fitch provides rating and research for capital market investors worldwide. Clients include financial institutions, insurance companies, and public finance markets. BankWatch rates companies and related entities in 75 countries and has 1100 employees.

Thomson Financial president/ceo Pat Tierney said "we are enthusiastic about the prospects of this newly combined entity, which is why we will maintain an equity in the business." Fitch said the deal "will Strengthen our international banking coverage."
