THOMAS PREFERS NOT TO BE PLUGGED INTO `HOME' FINALE.

Drum roll, maestro. The final farewell to ``Home Improvement'' begins Tuesday with the first part of the two-part last episode of the 8-year-old Tim Allen series - wrapping up May 25 with the finale, plus a retrospective special. Fans will see the long-hidden face of neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman Earl John Hindman (October 20, 1942 – December 29, 2003) was an American actor best known for his portrayal of the character Wilson W. Wilson Jr. on the hit television sitcom Home Improvement (1991–1999). ). What they won't see is any fresh material with erstwhile series son Jonathan Taylor Thomas Jonathan Taylor Thomas (born September 8, 1981) is an American child actor and former teen idol, perhaps best remembered for his roles of middle child Randy Taylor on the sitcom Home Improvement and the voice of the young Simba in Disney's The Lion King. .

Thomas did return to guest on an episode at Thanksgiving time last year, at which time Tim admitted to this column that he was shocked that the young actor wasn't focusing on college - his given reason for quitting the show. The strain over that lingers, and Finestra tells us that many on the ``Home'' team believe it's the reason Thomas nixed being part of the goodbye.

Finestra and his Wind Dancer Wind Dancer (Sofía Mantega Barrett) is a fictional character, a former mutant in the Marvel Universe, one of the student body in the Xavier Institute, and a member of the New Mutants squad therein. Her first appearance was in New Mutants vol. 2 #1.  partners - Matt Williams and David McFadzean - are turning their energies toward the big screen for the foreseeable future (as is Allen, who's about to begin shooting DreamWorks' ``Galaxy Quest''). They have a slate of projects in the works including the June-starting ``Where the Heart Is,'' with Williams directing - and Natalie Portman, hot off the new ``Star Wars,'' playing an abandoned teen who takes up residence in a Wal-Mart store.

``We're happy to have been able to walk away from `Home Improvement' with heads held high,'' says Finestra. ``The feeling is that the quality level was very good in our final season.''

Leslie Caron reveals, ``I seldom look at my old films. I'm not inclined to look back on the past, but to gallop forward. Life is too short, and there are too many fabulous things to do.''
