THOMAS BROS. MAPS INTRODUCES DIGITAL MAPPING TECHNOLOGY
TO COUNTIES OF KING, PIERCE AND SNOHOMISH
SEATTLE, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Thomas Bros. Maps held a press reception at the Seattle Space Needle this afternoon to introduce the first digitally produced Thomas Guide map books and other computerized mapping products and services the company will now offer to residents and businesses in the King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
The 1992 Thomas Guides for King, Pierce and Snohomish are among the first map books to be published utilizing a new digital mapping database developed by Thomas Bros. Maps. Listing 5,063 streets and nearly 400 new points of interest throughout the three counties, the 1992 edition Thomas Guides were created by converting the company's manually drawn mapping information to a highly accurate computerized format. The map pages in the computer-generated street directories are 30 percent larger and feature larger type, more block numbers for quicker address location, computer-enhanced color graphics and a simplified street index which now includes zip code listings.
Thomas Bros. Maps initiated the conversion of its extensive library of mapping information to a computerized format in 1986. By establishing a network of grid systems encompassing the states of Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California and Arizona, the company was able to create a new uniform page and grid system, eliminating the need for supplemental pages in future Thomas Guides. To date, the Irvine, Calif.-based company has digitally mapped six counties in California, as well as the Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., metropolitan areas. Fewer than a dozen metropolitan areas in the United States have been mapped by computer.
During the reception, Warren B. Wilson, president and co-owner of Thomas Bros. Maps, stated that the company's move to computerized mapping will enable it to more efficiently produce customized map products and services specially tailored to the needs of individual businesses and organizations within the three counties. The company's new digital mapping master database will also provide companies which utilize computer mapping programs or geographic information system (GIS) databases with the most comprehensive, updated mapping information available.
"By having the ability to link detailed mapping information with other geographic, demographic and census tract data," said Wilson, "King, Pierce and Snohomish area businesses and government organizations will be able to better understand and serve the needs of their communities."
The Space Needle press reception was attended by clients, members of the media, representatives from a wide variety of businesses and local planning organizations, and special guests which included Seattle Metro Traffic personality, Joe Chiaramonte.
