THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer GAME OF THE WEEK No. 1 HART (2-0-1) at No. 6 BIRMINGHAM (2-1) 7:30 p.m. Player to watch: Dennis Keyes, RB/DB, Birmingham Keyes, who has committed to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX , is one of the area's fastest and most athletic all-around players. He's been a force on both sides of the ball since his junior year. Last week, he rushed for 116 yards on 11 carries and scored four times - including a 54-yard run - in his final five attempts. Key stat stat adv. With no delay. adj. Immediate. STAT Stat! Clinical medicine adverb Fast, quickly, immediately, schnell, vite Lab medicine noun : 296 Hart of Newhall QB Sean Norton's passing yards per game. He completed 21 of 36 for 290 yards and two TDs last week. Why Hart will win: It has a much better all-around team. Birmingham has several of the region's top players - Keyes, receiver/cornerback Chad Green Chad Elton Green (Born: June 28, 1975 in Dunkirk, New York) is a former switch-hitting, righthanded minor league baseball player. An outfielder, he attended Mentor High School and then the University of Kentucky. and quarterback Ryan Lombardo - but annual state power Hart is a class above. And teams with big-play potential never are a bad long shot. Last week: Hart beat Westlake 38-13; Birmingham beat Reseda 45-0 Perspective: During its four-plus decades of existence, Birmingham never has beaten a Southern Section opponent - including a loss to Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in Week 1. Reseda, the team Birmingham beat last week, probably couldn't defeat Hart's JV. Meanwhile, Hart hasn't lost to a City Section opponent during head coach Mike Herrington's 14-year tenure. Outlook: The prospect of these two popular programs getting together for the first time seemed so exciting when the schools first agreed to meet a few months back. But the reality is, Hart hasn't been beaten during its past 25 games. Tonight the Indians are no less than a three-touchdown favorite. No. 9 HIGHLAND (3-0) at No. 8 CANYON (3-0) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Sean Coen Coen caught 10 passes last week - the most in one game by a Canyon receiver since 1996 - including the Cowboys' first two touchdowns in a victory over Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. of La Crescenta. Key stat: 299 The difference in yardage yard·age 1 n. 1. An amount or length measured in yards. 2. Cloth sold by the yard. Noun 1. allowed last week by Canyon (489 vs. C.V.) and Highland (190 vs. Burroughs of Ridgecrest). Why Canyon will win: Highland is the kind of opponent former regional power Canyon needs to beat to prove it's really back. After easy victories against unarmed opponents during the first two weeks, Canyon made strides with its victory over Crescenta Valley. But the bottom line is, the combined records of Canyon's first three opponents is 2-7; Highland of Palmdale is 3-0, a big difference. Why Highland will win: Highland is invigorated in·vig·or·ate tr.v. in·vig·or·at·ed, in·vig·or·at·ing, in·vig·or·ates To impart vigor, strength, or vitality to; animate: "A few whiffs of the raw, strong scent of phlox invigorated her" under new coach Sam Vaiana, and the growing school - enrollment has surpassed 3,500 this semester se·mes·ter n. Last week: Canyon beat Crescenta Valley 28-27; Highland beat Burroughs of Ridgecrest 21-10 Perspective: What an unexpectedly intriguing matchup this turned out to be, as both upstart teams have climbed into the Daily News top 10 for the first time in many years. Outlook: Canyon is doing fine offensively, finding a balance between Nate Longshore's passing and Louis Montano's running. The 489 yards Canyon gave up against Crescenta Valley is alarming but forgivable because C.V. runs an unconventional five-receiver set. No. 4 ANTELOPE VALLEY This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. The Antelope Valley (3-0) vs. LOYOLA (3-0) at Santa Monica College Santa Monica College was first opened in 1929 as Santa Monica Junior College. Current enrollment is 32,000 students in more than 90 fields of study. The college also has one of the largest international student populations of any community college in the US, with approximately , 7:30 p.m. Player to watch: Johnny Walker, QB, A.V. In a game such as this, only one Antelope really can make the difference. Key stat: 0-4 Record of Bakersfield, giving doubt to Antelope Valley's one big victory. Why Antelope Valley will win: The misdirection MISDIRECTION, practice. An error made by a judge in charging the jury in a special case. 2. Such misdirection is either in relation to matters of law or matters of fact. 3.-1. in the Antelopes' triple- option offense is difficult to prepare for. Even more difficult to prepare for is the athleticism and quickness of Walker. A few turnovers on defense and a game where Walker runs, passes and returns kicks well would give A.V. a chance. Why Loyola will win: It almost always does. Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. is a powerhouse, with players going five deep at every position, athletes everywhere and a former NFL NFL abbr. Last week: Antelope Valley beat Victor Valley 20-13; Loyola beat Muir of Pasadena 38-6 Perspective: Loyola is ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division I and No. 24 nationally by the Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency. Associated Press (AP) Cooperative news agency, the oldest and largest in the U.S. and long the largest in the world. . Antelope Valley is ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division III
Division III (or DIII) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States. . Outlook: Loyola owns the advantage at most positions. Walker is the wild card, but he'll need to have an incredible game for the Antelopes to come out on top. THIS WEEK'S OTHER TOP GAMES No. 5 VALENCIA (2-1) at ARROYO GRANDE (3-0) 7:30 p.m. Player to watch: Charles Burnley, RB, Valencia No. 1-ranked RB in the area is doing as well as expected. Last week, he ran for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including a 71-yarder, on 19 carries. He has rushed for 494 yards and seven TDs. Key stat: 7 Number of turnovers Valencia committed last week. ``If we do that against Arroyo Grande, we'll lose 28-0,'' coach Brian Stiman said. Why Valencia will win: The most important members of Valencia's offense, Burnley and QB Stephen Wright
Why Arroyo Grande will win: Northern League schools play serious football, and Arroyo Grande isn't No. 4 in the state's Division II rankings for nothing. PK Billy Vinnedge could be a factor. He has kicked four FGs, including a 52- and 46-yarder last week. Last week: Valencia beat Oxnard 28-26; Arroyo Grande beat Lompoc 20-7 Perspective: After stumbling stumbling an abnormal gait in which the animal does not fully extend the limb, the plantar surface is not properly placed with respect to the ground surface at the time of impact so that the limb is likely to collapse and the animal to fall. the first week against Bishop Amat of La Puente La Puente (lä pwĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 36,955), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; laid out 1841, inc. 1956. Primarily residential, the city manufactures hardware, electronics, and paper products. , Valencia has scored 13 touchdowns over the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Arroyo Grande has scored a total of seven touchdowns against three mediocre me·di·o·cre adj. Moderate to inferior in quality; ordinary. See Synonyms at average. [French médiocre, from Latin mediocris : medius, middle; see medhyo- opponents. Outlook: Valencia appears to have more weapons - particularly Burnley, who is among California's top RBs. Burnley does need to watch out for FS Chad Simonson, who is Arroyo Grande's best player. CRESPI (3-0) at NOTRE DAME (3-0) 7:30 p.m. Player to watch: Marcel Marquez, QB, Notre Dame Makes the Knights' offense go with feet and arm. Key stat: 145.7 Yards per game allowed by the Crespi of Encino defense, second best among area Southern Section teams. Why Crespi will win: The Celts The following pages provide lists of nations or people of Celtic origin, arranged by branch of Celtic ethnicity or language grouping: Goidelic Celts
Why Notre Dame will win: There were question marks heading into the season with new starters at quarterback and running back. But there is no question now that this Notre Dame team is better than last year's version. The offense moves the ball much easier, and the defense is getting better every game. Last week: Crespi beat Chatsworth 20-7; Notre Dame beat Saugus 41-7 Perspective: Both teams are 3-0, but that doesn't mean their records are equal. Notre Dame beat three teams that have a combined Daily News ranking of 44. Two of three Crespi victims are winless and not ranked in the Daily News Top 40. Outlook: These teams are old rivals, formerly league mates in the Mission League. Results haven't always gone as expected in the rivalry, but Crespi hasn't beaten Notre Dame since 1992, though the Celts lead the all-time series. Notre Dame should creep closer. NEWBURY PARK (1-2) at MOORPARK (3-0) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Rudy Carpenter, QB, Newbury Park Passed for 11 touchdowns in three games but was shut down in the second half last week. Needs to play well for a full game for the Panthers to have a chance. Key stat: 117 Total points allowed by Newbury Park over the past two games. The Panthers are worst in the area in points allowed. Why Newbury Park will win: Moorpark hasn't faced a prolific passing team such as the Panthers. Moorpark has faced 37 pass attempts this year and almost certainly will see that many in this game. The Panthers need to get off to a good start. They trailed 21-0 and 20-0 in the past two games. Why Moorpark will win: Moorpark is a good running team. Good running teams become great running teams against Newbury Park, which allowed 340 yards rushing last week to Alex Garfio of Buena of Ventura. RB combo Cliff Cardwell and Anthony Lopez should have big games. Last week: Newbury Park lost to Buena 54-28; Moorpark beat Hueneme of Oxnard 6-0 Perspective: This is the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule. opener for both teams, a week earlier than most leagues because the Marmonte has eight teams. Since Moorpark moved back into the Marmonte League before the 1998 season, Newbury Park holds a 3-1 advantage in the series. Moorpark won last season. Outlook: Newbury Park is an exciting team, more because of the points allowed than the points the Panthers can put up. Moorpark scored only six points last week and will need at least to score in the 30s this week. The way the Panthers are playing, that shouldn't be a problem. No. 7 PALMDALE (3-0) at UPLAND (1-2) 7:30 p.m. Player to watch: Jacob McCravey, QB, Palmdale Passed for 237 yards last week but 57 the week before. This game will show if he has turned a corner. Key stat: 7 Number of different players to catch passes from McCravey last week. Why Palmdale will win: The Falcons finally are getting back the balance on offense that got them to the Southern Section Division III semifinals last season. Palmdale has two players who can run the ball in LaRon McIntyre and Sean Edwards, a solid QB in McCravey and an exciting target in WR JaVonte Holmes. The defense is above average. Why Upland will win: Can cause problems with a shotgun passing attack not seen much in prep football. Palmdale hasn't been challenged this season and has made some mistakes that might have given away games against better teams. Last week: Palmdale beat Alta Loma 32-16; Upland lost to Canyon Springs 44-7 Perspective: The teams haven't played recently, but Upland is an average team in the Baseline League, the same league in which Alta Loma is one of the title contenders. Outlook: Upland is a young team that has trouble against speed. Palmdale has plenty and should speed out to a 4-0 record. PARACLETE (3-0) vs. KAISER (2-0-1) at Fontana HS, 7 p.m. Player to watch: Jonathan Lewis For the England international cricketer who plays for Gloucestershire, please see Jon Lewis and for the American football player, see Jonathan Lewis (football player). Jonathan James Benjamin Lewis (born 21 May 1970, Isleworth, Middlesex, England) is a former English cricketer. , RB, Paraclete Rushed for 125 yards last week as Paraclete's second RB next to Jared Nelson, who scored six touchdowns in the same game. Key stat: 28 Consecutive victories by Paraclete, most by any team in the Southern Section. Why Paraclete will win: Confusing wing-T offense is difficult for any team to stop. The Spirits of Lancaster average 233 rushing yards per game. The return of two linemen - Chris Galdanez and Mike Berry
Why Kaiser will win: Kaiser regularly plays Division I and II teams, which Paraclete never has faced. Kaiser of Fontana is the No. 1 team in Division VIII and can pound the ball on the ground with RB Allen Wade. Kaiser will win by overpowering o·ver·pow·er·ing adj. So strong as to be overwhelming: an overpowering need for solitude. o Paraclete with bigger players. Last week: Paraclete beat Rosamond 56-7; Kaiser beat Rialto Rialto, city (1990 pop. 72,388), San Bernardino co., S Calif., a residential suburb of San Bernardino; inc. 1911. The city has greatly expanded as a result of the economic and demographic growth of the southern California area. 34-3 Perspective: In the past, when Paraclete has moved up to play a bigger school, that school usually had some question marks. The Spirits never have gone up against the best team three divisions in front of them. Outlook: Paraclete will need to play error-free ball to keep its winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins streak, run - an unbroken series of events; "had a streak of bad luck"; "Nicklaus had a run of birdies" going. CALABASAS (3-0) at ROYAL (1-2) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Kyle Uebelhardt, QB, Royal After passing for 352 yards in Game 1, Uebelhardt has 286 yards in the past two games combined. Key stat: 14 Rushing yards last week by Royal. Why Calabasas will win: Spreads around the ball to four running backs, none of which has gained 100 yards despite Calabasas averaging 158 rushing yards a game. QB Keith Barrett has improved in each game, throwing two touchdowns last week. Why Royal will win: Establishes some semblance of a running game to take the pressure off Uebelhardt. Since Royal's Week 1 upset of Saugus, teams have loaded the defensive backfield with seven players and made Uebelhardt's life miserable. Last week: Calabasas beat Nordhoff of Ojai 26-7; Royal lost to Ventura 28-20 Perspective: This is the first Marmonte League game for new member Calabasas. Inexplicably in·ex·pli·ca·ble adj. Difficult or impossible to explain or account for. in·ex pli·ca·bil , the Coyotes are doing well so far in Division
IV after moving up from Division XI. This game will be the first
indication if Calabasas can hang in the new league.
Outlook: Royal of Simi Valley's loss to Ventura gave away any momentum left from the first-week upset of Saugus. Calabasas will be excited to play first Marmonte League game, and that could be the difference. BUENA (2-1) at CAMARILLO (2-1) 7 p.m. Player to watch: Alex Garfio, RB, Buena Leads the Southern Section in rushing with 677 yards, including 340 last week. Key stat: 3 Number of players (Garrett Barlow bar·low n. An inexpensive, one- or two-bladed pocketknife. [After Barlow, the family name of its makers, two brothers in Sheffield, England.] , Cason Gilmer and Roy Valdez) to both score a touchdown and make an interception last week. Why Buena will win: A big offensive line and power running back who might be able to pound the ball better than anyone in the Southern Section. Buena of Ventura just wins with the basics and puts the pressure on the other team to respond. Why Camarillo will win: Returns four players from injury to a team already playing well. QB Garrett Barlow has a solid arm and above-average athleticism. He needs to pass for at least 150 yards and run for 100. Camarillo won't get as many turnovers to set up short drives against a running team. Last week: Buena beat Newbury Park 54-28; Camarillo beat Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. 24-14 Perspective: Camarillo beat Thousand Oaks, which beat Buena. But Camarillo lost to Agoura, which was blown out by Buena. OK, this whole triangle only makes things more confusing. Outlook: Camarillo's secondary carried the day against Thousand Oaks but won't be able to do much to stop Buena's runs. This game will be won at the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage n. pl. lines of scrimmage Football Either of two imaginary lines extending across the field parallel to the goal line at the ends of the ball as it rests prior to being snapped and at which each team lines up for .
