THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.

Byline: - Erik Boal, Gerry Gittelson and Romona Shelburne

GAME OF THE DAY

No. 5 VALENCIA (6-2) at No. 6 CANYON (7-1), 7 p.m.

Key stat: 30. Touchdowns scored by Canyon of Canyon Country junior RB J.J. DiLuigi, tying him for the state lead with Bear River of Grass Valley's Kevin Grimes Kevin Grimes (born August 19, 1979 in Ottawa, Ontario) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. Playing career

.

Outlook: This is a big one, with two of the Southland's premier programs going head-to-head in a showdown of teams with plenty of big-play performers.

Valencia, coming off a disappointing 17-14 loss to Hart of Newhall, has a great one-two punch one-two punch

Vereen has rushed for 1,125 yards (9.1 avg.), caught 35 passes and scored 19 TDs. The explosive junior has 12 100-yard rushing performances in 17 games the past two seasons.

Canyon's DiLuigi has rushed for 1,087 yards, caught 14 passes for 303 yards and is averaging 43.5 yards on kickoff returns.

), will have their hands full: Valencia averages 35.5 points and 466.1 yards - best among area schools.

No. 1 NOTRE DAME Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  (8-0) at No. 9 ST. FRANCIS (7-1), 7:30 p.m.

Key stat: 71. Points allowed by St. Francis of La Canada Flintridge, tied for fifth in the area. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks is averaging more than 40 points per game.

Outlook: This might have been a battle of undefeated teams, but St. Francis committed four turnovers last week in a 22-14 setback against Chaminade of West Hills.

St. Francis has lost seven in a row in the series - two games last season - and 15 of the past 16 meetings. The Golden Knights' last victory came in 1997, when they defeated a Justin Fargas-led Notre Dame team 28-24.

St. Francis traditionally played its rival tough, losing by a combined 20 points from 2000 to 2003. Notre Dame's two victories last season were by a combined 66 points.

St. Francis had found success using a two-quarterback system, with Luke Collis and Stephen Peterson, but Peterson (injured in·jure

also sat out the Chaminade game, after suffering an ankle injury the previous week.

The performance of Scott Stephens, a senior WR/DB, will be critical for St. Francis. Stephens leads the area with eight interceptions - he's also caught 38 passes - and his big-play ability could ignite St. Francis.

No. 11 ROYAL (5-3) at No. 7 MOORPARK (5-3), 7 p.m.

Key stat: 29. Touchdowns scored by Royal of Simi Valley's Curtis Marsh and Moorpark's Dan Moran and Darrell Scott For Darrell Scott, the "Rachel's Challenge" founder of this name, see .

Darrell Scott is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has written several mainstream country hits, and also has established himself as one of Nashville's premier session
. They are three of the Marmonte League's top four running backs, along with Simi Valley's Devin Kelley.

Outlook: Even if it wins its final two regular-season games, Royal can't count on repeating as Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Royal defeated Newbury Park 14-13, enabling Moorpark - coming off a 27-0 romp over Simi Valley on FSN (Full-Service Network) A communications network that provides shopping, movies on demand and access to databases and a variety of interactive services.  West 2's ``High School Game of the Week'' - to climb into a a first-place tie with the Panthers.

Depending on the outcome of tonight's Westlake-Newbury Park game, Moorpark could clinch a share of the title with a victory. A Royal win, combined with other scenarios, could have four teams entering the final week of the regular season with two losses and two others with three, all fighting for the Marmonte's four automatic playoff berths.

If Moorpark continues to run the ball as it did against Simi Valley, it is a tough team to beat. Dan Moran and Darrell Scott, who have combined for more than 1,800 rushing yards and scored 21 touchdowns, wore down the Simi Valley defense for more than 250 yards.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER GAMES

No. 17 LANCASTER (7-2) at PALMDALE (3-5), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Lancaster can clinch the Golden League title with a victory over Palmdale (3-1). That was the situation the past two years, and the Eagles failed to win either.

Lancaster has lost five in a row to Palmdale since a 28-8 victory in 1999.

Palmdale has had a difficult season, losing 58-14 to Oaks Christian of Westlake Village two weeks ago, then rallying last week for a 41-14 victory over Highland, the only Golden League team to beat Lancaster this year.

Big plays could be crucial. Both offenses are balanced and move the ball well. Palmdale is led by WR Tyreace House (22 catches, 547 yards, 6 TDs) and RB Dominic Blood (758 yards, 10 TDs). Lancaster's key players include RBs Tony Jackson

 (4-4), 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Chaminade of West Hills was able to fly under the area radar much of the season, but after last week's 22-14 victory over previously unbeaten St. Francis of La Canada Flintridge, the Eagles are a contender to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the Mission League.

Before Chaminade can entertain thoughts of a title-deciding showdown with Notre Dame next week, it must first secure a victory in one of the league's toughest environments. Before a 49-6 loss to Notre Dame two weeks ago, St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe Springs, city (1990 pop. 15,520), Los Angeles co., SW Calif., inc. 1957. No. 19 WESTLAKE (3-5) at No. 12 NEWBURY PARK (6-2), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Westlake still is on the outside looking in on the Marmonte League playoff picture, but the Warriors are hot, and healthy, at the right time to make a run toward one of the league's four playoff berths in Southern Section Div. IV.

Westlake rebounded from a five-game losing streak with one-sided victories over Agoura and Calabasas, and it is one of seven Marmonte teams still with a chance to reach postseason.

Newbury Park, which suffered a 14-13 setback last week to Royal of Simi Valley, its first league loss, remains tied for first place with Moorpark. Wins in their last two games would ensure the Panthers at least a share of their first league title since 1998. Westlake's playoff hopes would die with a loss.

 (5-2) at No. 10 SYLMAR (8-0), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Following a 28-7 victory two weeks ago over Kennedy of Granada Hills, Sylmar coach London Woodfin said his team had one more important hurdle to get past to complete an undefeated regular season: tonight's game against rival San Fernando.

Sylmar has won six in a row in the series, but San Fernando shared the Valley Mission League title last season after the Spartans were upset by Kennedy of Granada Hills.

Taft of Woodland Hills is the likely No. 1 seed for the City Section playoffs, and Sylmar can strengthen its case as the San Fernando Valley's No. 2 City team with a strong performance against the Tigers.

Sylmar RB C.J. Gable leads the area with 1,360 yards rushing. San Fernando is led by RB Devoil Hicks Hicks   , Edward 1780-1849.

QUARTZ HILL (3-5) at HIGHLAND (3-5), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Both teams need to win their final two regular-season games to make the playoffs, so this essentially is an elimination game.

Highland (2-2), which upset Lancaster 28-27 two weeks ago, has the best chance. The Bulldogs can make the playoffs with victories over Quartz Hill (tonight) and last-place Knight (Nov. 10) and a Lancaster loss to Palmdale. Outlook: Both teams have lost to third-ranked Grace Brethren of Simi Valley, and this game looms large for a potential first-round home game in the Southern Section Div. XI playoffs.

Valley Christian of Cerritos, ranked fifth in Div. XI, defeated Village Christian of Sun Valley 17-7 last season in their first Olympic League meeting.
