THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

No. 4 NOTRE DAME Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  (6-2, 2-1)

at CHAMINADE (6-2, 2-1) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Verlondon Harris, DL, Notre Dame

St. Paul St. Paul

sacked Chaminade eight times last week. Harris and his teammates need to apply similar pressure to disrupt Chaminade's passing attack.

Key stat: 1995

Last time Chaminade of West Hills beat Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.

Why Notre Dame will win: Notre Dame gets after the quarterback, plays solid defense, is well-coached and isn't likely to get beaten often by Chaminade's simple strategy of finding the single-covered man between WRs Marcus Everett and Adrian Aye-Darko.

Why Chaminade will win: The Eagles had a week to shore up the pass-protection deficiencies from last week. If the same mistakes aren't made against Notre Dame, and Chaminade has time to throw the ball, the Eagles are a dangerous team behind QB Chris Turner
For the American baseball player use Chris Turner (baseball player)

Chris Turner (born September 15, 1958 in Sheffield, where he attended Myers Grove School) is an English football manager.
 (2,013 yards, 18 TDs).

Last week: Notre Dame beat St. Francis 21-15; Chaminade lost to St. Paul 34-14

Perspective: With both teams having beaten St. Francis of La Canada and losing to St. Paul, this game likely will decide second place in the Mission League, and possibly which team will get a first-round home game in the playoffs.

Outlook: Notre Dame is similar to St. Francis - solid defense and a good running game with the hint of a pass. Chaminade beat St. Francis and could surprise Notre Dame.

No. 8 MOORPARK (7-1, 5-0)

at No. 7 AGOURA (7-1, 4-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Cody Holland, QB, Moorpark

In a prime example of run opening up the pass, Holland is beginning to heat up. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns last week.

Key stat: 38.9/10.7

Average points scored by Moorpark this season compared to the average allowed by Agoura.

Why Moorpark will win: Moorpark's defense is solid again, but its offense is a surprise. Behind RB Anthony Lopez (1,006 yards, 13 TDs), Moorpark is piling up the points. The only loss was a surprising defeat to Hueneme of Oxnard when Lopez was injured and didn't play.

Why Agoura will win: A stellar passing team all season, Agoura is improving its defense and running game. Joey LaRocque has given the running game a lift. He rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns last week. On the season, he is averaging 12.7 yards on 25 carries.

Last week: Moorpark beat Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  49-28; Agoura beat Newbury Park 42-0

Perspective: If Moorpark wins, it would set up a final-week showdown with Westlake with the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  title on the line for the second consecutive year. If Agoura wins, Moorpark would drop to third in the league and Agoura likely would wrap up a first-round home game.

Outlook: Agoura is 1-4 against Moorpark since Moorpark entered the league in 1998. The Chargers, coming off two defensive shutouts, might be one of the area's most improved teams since the beginning of the season. This game will tell.

LANCASTER (4-4, 2-1)

at No. 5 PALMDALE (7-1, 3-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Rodney Trimm, QB, Palmdale

Lancaster showed it could shut down a powerful running game last week against Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
and Palmdale has gone more to the run since JaVonte Holmes was injured in Week 1. If Lancaster shuts down Palmdale's ground game, all of the pressure falls to the sophomore Trimm.

Key stat: 6.6

The average number of points Palmdale's defense has allowed in three Golden League games.

Why Lancaster will win: The Eagles are scoring 24.6 points a game in the Golden League and have been held to fewer than 10 points once - a 42-6 loss to No. 3 Canyon in the season opener. Palmdale's defense has been solid.

Why Palmdale will win: Palmdale has the league's best receivers in Justin Shaw and T.J. McKay. Trimm has had trouble getting them the ball, but if Lancaster focuses on stopping Adrian Jenkins and Holmes, it will open the passing game.

Last week: Palmdale defeated Highland 10-6; Lancaster defeated Antelope Valley 26-21.

Perspective: Lancaster won only three games the past two seasons and hasn't made the playoffs since 2000. Palmdale advanced to the Div. III semifinals last season. But none of that will matter tonight. Lancaster is brimming brim
n.
1. The rim or uppermost edge of a hollow container or natural basin.

2. A projecting rim or edge: the brim of a hat.

3. A border or an edge. See Synonyms at border.
with confidence after its upset of A.V.

Outlook: The weather might play a big role. If it rains hard, both teams will have to keep the ball on the ground, which would be an advantage for Lancaster because it would take away the threat of Palmdale's passing game. Last week in the rain, Trimm tried only five passes. But Palmdale has found a way to win close games and its seniors want to clinch the Golden League title tonight.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER TOP GAMES

OAKS CHRISTIAN (8-0, 4-0)

at NORDHOFF (7-1, 5-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Marc Tyler Marc Tyler (born September 27, 1988 in Palmdale, California) is an American football running back for the University of Southern California Trojans football team. High school career
Tyler attended Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California.
, RB, Oaks Christian

Aaron Ware gets most of the attention, and deservedly so, but this freshman, who is the son of former Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Rams RB Wendell Tyler Wendell Avery Tyler (born May 20, 1955 in Shreveport, Louisiana), was a former professional American football player who was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 3rd round of the 1977 NFL Draft. A 5'10", 205 lbs. , has just three fewer touchdowns (11).

Key stat: 2

Number of undefeated teams remaining in the area, Westlake and Oaks Christian of Westlake Village.

Why Oaks Christian will win: No team has finished within fewer than 25 points of the Lions this year. Oaks Christian is stacked with two potential Div. I RBs in Ware and Tyler, and two standout QBs in Joey Halzle Joey Halzle is a quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. He graduated from Oaks Christian High School. He is currently the backup to Sam Bradford at the position. [1] References

and Jimmy Clausen James Richard "Jimmy" Clausen (born September 21, 1987, in Thousand Oaks, California[3]) is an American football player. He is a quarterback at the University of Notre Dame. .

Why Nordhoff will win: Nordhoff of Ojai faced two bigger Marmonte League teams in the nonleague schedule, beating Calabasas and losing to Moorpark. It shouldn't be intimidated.

Last week: Oaks Christian beat Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  28-0; Nordhoff beat Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  14-13

Perspective: Nordhoff, which already beat Oak Park of Agoura Hills, seems to be Oaks Christian's biggest challenger for the Tri-Valley League title. A victory would bring Oaks Christian closer to the first league title in school history. After years as an independent, Oaks Christian finished second to Carpinteria last year.

Outlook: If Oaks Christian can bury Nordhoff and Oak Park as it has its first eight opponents, it might as well start engraving engraving, in its broadest sense, the art of cutting lines in metal, wood, or other material either for decoration or for reproduction through printing. In its narrowest sense, it is an intaglio printing process in which the lines are cut in a metal plate with a  the Div. XI title.

Key stat: 3

Number of teams that entered Serra League play undefeated but have already lost a total of five league games in three weeks.

Why Loyola will win: QB Scott Deke deke

is justifying that scholarship to Virginia with stellar play in recent weeks. He single-handedly carried the team to victory last week, throwing for four touchdowns, leading the team with 60 rushing yards and batting down a pass headed for the end zone late.

  • Michael Angelo Batio, American guitarist
  • Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564), Italian Renaissance artist

 when Angelo didn't play.

Last week: Loyola of Los Angeles beat St. John Bosco 29-24; Santa Margarita beat Servite of Anaheim 20-17

Perspective: The winner will be in control for the Serra League title with one game to play.

Outlook: Again, Loyola seems to be peaking at the right time. But Loyola will need to get the running game back going to rejoin the newfound new·found

Player to watch: Anthony Dickson, RB, Grant

Returns after being suspended from last week's game for receiving two taunting penalties the previous week.

Key stat: 5

Career-high touchdown passes by Grant QB Dashawn Smith last week to make up for Dickson's absence.

Why Canoga Park will win: Canoga Park only has two losses, a relatively close game to Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and a six-point loss to North Hollywood. The defense has four shutouts but allowed a season-high 27 points to Poly of Sun Valley last week.

Why Grant will win: The offense seems to be in a groove of late, averaging 40.3 points in the past four games. The emergence of Smith last week, combined with the return of Dickson, could give Grant of Van Nuys the second dimension needed to advance in the playoffs. The run defense improved last week, doing a good job on Verdugo Hills RB Ryen Carew.

Last week: Canoga Park beat Poly 34-27; Grant beat Verdugo Hills 38-23

Perspective: Grant can clinch the Sunset Six League title with a victory. If Canoga Park pulls the upset, it would create a three-way tie for first.

Outlook: Canoga Park is the last team with a chance of knocking off Grant in league play. But Grant seems to be getting on a roll.

BURROUGHS (4-4, 1-2)

at CANYON (7-1, 2-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Jeff Briscoe, OL, Canyon

Briscoe, a senior leader and three-year starter, looks to open holes for hot RB Louis Montano and to protect QB Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. Longshore was an Elite-11 quarterback in high school and a 4-star recruit rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com."How Far ... .

Key stat: 20

Touchdowns by Montano, four shy of Chris Peery's school record of 24, set in 1989.

Why Burroughs will win: Burroughs of Burbank has a gifted sophomore RB in Thomas Kyle, who has been among the region's most consistent breakaway threats since working his way into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

a month ago. Kyle, a 5-foot-7, 160-pounder who runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, rushed for 196 yards against Hart on Monday.

Why Canyon will win: Few teams have such a potent and balanced offense. Longshore long·shore

has completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,035 yards and 22 TDs. Montano has rushed for 999 yards (8.2 avg.) and 20 TDs, and he's also caught 20 passes for 314 yards. Sean Coen, Canyon's all-time leading receiver, has 66 receptions and 13 TDs.

Last week: Burroughs lost to Hart 40-0; Canyon beat Burbank 39-33.

Perspective: The teams have faced each other every season since 1992, and Canyon owns an 8-3 series advantage, including a 34-0 victory last year.

Outlook: Except for Kyle, Burroughs doesn't appear to have enough offensive talent to keep pace. Burroughs needs to play near-perfect football, avoid mistakes and turnovers, and perhaps get a few lucky breaks for a chance to win. Meanwhile, Canyon's defensive woes continue, despite personnel changes, so the spotlight will be on that unit's performance.

HART (5-3, 3-0) vs. SAUGUS (2-6, 0-3)

at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Devin Mills, OL, Hart

Like a Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  slot machine, Mills has been on the money this season, though he has just one arm.  per game. Westlake (446.1) is the region's only large school with more production.

Why Hart will win: After connecting on 15 of 18 passes for 282 yards and five touchdowns (four in the first half) in a victory over Burroughs of Burbank last week, Hart of Newhall's Sean Norton is the hottest QB in the region. He has completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,092 yards - an average of more than 261 yards a game - and 23 touchdowns. Hart has won five games in a row and has won a Southern Section-record 61 consecutive league games since 1991.

Why Saugus will win: QB Travis Babin has struggled through most of the season but had one of his most productive games last week, completing 15 of 29 passes for 227 yards and scoring on a 1-yard run. However, Babin threw four INTs, giving him seven INTs compared with three TDs this season.

Last week: Hart beat Burroughs 40-8; Saugus lost to Valencia 48-8.

Perspective: Here's a cold, hard fact: Since a 35-28 loss to Hart three years ago, Saugus never has recovered, winning just four of 19 games through last week.

Outlook: Saugus has lost five in a row (and the finale against high-powered Canyon next week won't be easy, either), so the Centurions are running out of opportunities. A victory over Hart would be the biggest in school history - dare we say history, period? - but of Hart's rare losses over the past decade, none has been a surprise slip against inferior opponents.

VALENCIA (6-2, 2-1) vs. BURBANK (5-3, 1-2)

at Burroughs HS, 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Mike Herrick, QB, Valencia

Herrick, a sophomore who has passed for 2,151 yards, needs 65 more to eclipse Kyle Bauer's school record of 2,215, set in 2000.

Key stat: 4

Number of INTs Valencia's Geoff Tisdale needs to surpass Steve Smith's regional single-season record of 12 (Taft of Woodland Hills, 2001).

Why Valencia will win: Sophisticated passing offenses have given Burbank trouble; fast-paced opponents Canyon, Hart of Newhall and Chaminade of West Hills have beaten the Bulldogs. Valencia can clinch a playoff berth.

Why Burbank will win: Except for a 45-0 loss to Hart three weeks ago, Burbank has been competitive in every game this season - quite a development for a team that hadn't won more than two games in a season since 1992. QB Mike McDonald Mike McDonald (born June 22, 1958 in North Hollywood, California) is a former professional American football player who played long snapper for nine seasons in the NFL.  has passed for 1,267 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Last week: Valencia beat Saugus 48-8; Burbank lost to Canyon 39-33.

Perspective: Valencia is 8-0 against Burbank, and over the past four games in the series the Vikings have averaged nearly 55 points a game.

Outlook: Yes, the ``Burbank Is Back'' story has been heartwarming heart·warm·ing or heart-warm·ing

ANTELOPE VALLEY (5-3, 1-2)

at QUARTZ HILL (4-4, 2-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Mychal Bogan, QB, Antelope Valley

Bogan fumbled at the end of last week's 26-21 loss to Lancaster. How he responds could determine the outcome tonight.

Key stat: 1

The number of times Antelope Valley has scored more than 21 points in a game this season.

Why Antelope Valley will win: The Antelopes of Lancaster haven't lost consecutive games since 2000 and have won 17 Golden League championships since 1971.

Why Quartz Hill will win: Antelope Valley's vaunted vaunt

defense, which entered Golden League play having allowed only five points a game, has given up 17 points a game in its three league games. With the emergence of senior RB Quinn Porter, who has six TDs in the past two games, Quartz Hill has had no trouble scoring.

Last week: Antelope Valley lost to Lancaster 26-21; Quartz Hill defeated Littlerock 27-15.

Perspective: Quartz Hill scored with about 5 minutes remaining to avoid a shutout last year in a 31-6 loss. But the Antelopes have lost three of their past five games.

Outlook: With the exception of its loss to Highland of Palmdale in the Golden League opener, Quartz Hill has looked like a playoff-caliber team for the past month. But it's difficult to know how good the Rebels are because they haven't played Antelope Valley or Palmdale.
