THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

GAME OF THE WEEK: THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  (1-2) at No. 1 WESTLAKE (3-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Matt Luft, WR, Thousand Oaks

All the attention will be on Westlake receivers Michael Stuart Michael Stuart (born January 9, 1975 in New York City) is a salsa singer and actor of Puerto Rican descent. Early years

Receptions by Stuart last week out of 15 completions by the team.

Why Thousand Oaks will win: Not as bad as its record indicates. QB Chris Owens Chris Owens may refer to:

  • Chris Owens (basketball) (born 1979), American basketball player
  • Chris Owens (burlesque performer), American burlesque performer in New Orleans
is a solid veteran who has yet to break out this season. There's more of a running game this year with Jack Boger. The defense needs to play better.

Why Westlake will win: They're No. 1 for a reason. Westlake already has beaten Hart of Newhall and Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks, two teams better than Thousand Oaks. Stuart and Miller - both 6-5 - are difficult to stop on offense and defense.

However, Thousand Oaks won the year before.

Outlook: Rivalry games always are difficult, especially for a team coming off a big win. Westlake needs to be careful but shouldn't have a problem.

No. 4 VALENCIA (3-0) vs. ARROYO GRANDE (4-0)

at Canyon High, 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Torrey O'Brien, LB, Valencia

O'Brien, among the team's key hitters, helped hold Oxnard to 188 yards and seven first downs during Valencia's 37-0 victory last week.

Why Valencia will win: Teams from the Central Coast area - where the running game is prevalent - rarely face sophisticated passing offenses such as Valencia's. If Herrick continues to have a hot hand, and WR Shane Morales (area-leading 23 catches) finds some openings, Valencia could be in good shape.

Why Arroyo Grande will win: Arroyo Grande is the most talented team Valencia has faced, and the Pac-5 League power's unconventional misdirection MISDIRECTION, practice. An error made by a judge in charging the jury in a special case.

offense is difficult to simulate in practice. Valencia coach Brian Stiman said he's impressed with Arroyo Grande's size and defense.

Last week: Valencia beat Oxnard 37-0; Arroyo Grande beat Lompoc 31-0.

Perspective: Valencia has played a team from the Northern League or Pac-5 League only once, a 28-21 loss to Arroyo Grande in 2002 that was among the season's most exciting games.

Outlook: This is a major hump hump (hump) a rounded eminence.

Antelope Valley has yet to allow a touchdown this season, but they also haven't faced a QB like the Virginia-bound Deke.

Key stat: 450

Number of combined wins by Loyola coach Steve Grady (251) and Antelope Valley's Brent Newcomb (199).

Why Loyola will win: The Cubs responded to a disappointing loss in Week 2 to Venice with a shutout against Muir last week. The Venice game seemed to be a wake-up call for Loyola, and it won't want to fall back to .500.

Why Antelope Valley will win: The players are inspired to give Newcomb his 200th career victory this week. The defense hasn't allowed a touchdown all year, and RB Kreig Peters and FB Aaron Wilson Aaron Wilson (b. Last week: Antelope Valley beat Victor Valley 18-0; Loyola beat Muir of Pasadena 45-0.

Perspective: Loyola has a 9-2-1 record all-time against Antelope Valley, but the Antelopes were a blocked field goal away from pulling the upset last year on the Cubs' home field. Loyola eventually won 21-19, but not before A.V. rallied from the 21-0 deficit.

Outlook: Both schools are four-time Southern Section champions, both have legendary coaches, but it's the players who will decide this game. Loyola has more depth, but Antelope Valley has run over its first three opponents. Just go watch the game, it's too close to call.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER TOP GAMES

No. 6 GRANADA HILLS (3-0) at VENICE (3-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Brandon Charls, QB, Granada Hills

Leading area City Section players in yards passing.

Key stat: 5

Number of touchdowns scored by Granada Hills WR Darion Donelly in just eight catches.

Why Granada Hills will win: Unlike in previous years, no team is going to push Granada Hills around because of a huge offensive line. Matt Streid, Ryan Summerlin and Chris Haymes average more than 300 pounds. The passing game is as good as any in the City Section.

Why Venice will win: Venice is loaded this year. QB Beau Davis, RB Byron Ellis and WR Ryan Graves can challenge any skill-position trio in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, . The team already proved it isn't a normal City Section team by beating Southern Section Div. I power Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Perspective: This could be a preview of the City final at the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum.  in December. Though Venice has beaten Loyola and a good Carson team, Granada Hills has yet to really play anyone. This will be its first test.

Outlook: Venice is playing the best ball in the City Section and has to be favored. Granada Hills didn't get much respect in Southern California entering the season. A win here would get that respect and make it the City favorite.

No. 3 NOTRE DAME (2-1) at CRESPI (3-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Cary Harris, RB, Notre Dame

After just five carries the first two weeks, Notre Dame's best player got more carries (13) and broke through with 194 yards.

Key stat: 26-7

co·in
was the score by which Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks beat Crespi last year.

Why Notre Dame will win: Bounced back to dominate a good Palmdale team last week. QB Garrett Green, given the starting nod last week, is a sophomore but gives Notre Dame a more balanced offense with his ability to pass and run. The defensive line puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback.

Why Crespi will win: Just tell Sylmar that Crespi is a small school. This is the biggest rivalry for Crespi, and the Celts The following pages provide lists of nations or people of Celtic origin, arranged by branch of Celtic ethnicity or language grouping:

are hungry for a win. If Notre Dame makes mistakes like it did two weeks ago against Westlake, any good team can beat it.

Last week: Notre Dame beat Palmdale 35-21; Crespi beat Sylmar 26-7

Perspective: The last time Crespi beat Notre Dame was in 1992. Crespi used to be in the Mission League and Div. III with Notre Dame and still has the series advantage. Now Crespi is in Div. X.

Outlook: Crespi is an improving program that knows a win here would put it back on the map. This is the Celts' first legitimate chance to beat Notre Dame in a long while. However, the Knights have to be given the edge until it happens.

SYLMAR (1-2) at NORTH HOLLYWOOD (2-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Marlon Lucky, RB, North Hollywood

Sylmar has had the leading rusher in the City Section the past two years. But now Lucky is outrushing the entire Sylmar team.

Key stat: minus-37

Rushing yards, or lack thereof, by Sylmar against Crespi last week, the lowest total in Jeff Engilman's 28 years of coaching.

Why Sylmar will win: Defensively, Sylmar is one of the better teams in the City Section. It's the anemic anemic

(9 carries, 3 yards) didn't get it done last week.

Why North Hollywood will win: The passing game, with QB William Cowan People named William Cowan include:
  • Dr. William Cowan (1818–1902) of the Hudson's Bay Company
  • William Cowan, former reeve of North Gower Township, Ontario
and WR Kenny Kinard, actually isn't bad for a City team, and neither is the defense. But Lucky is the one who makes the team go.

Last week: Sylmar lost to Crespi 26-7; North Hollywood beat Van Nuys 23-6

Perspective: Last season, North Hollywood upset Sylmar 39-35. But the Valley Mission League usually handles the Sunset Six. But every team in the Sunset Six shoots for Sylmar. North Hollywood gets up for this one.

Outlook: Sylmar needs to bounce back in this game or otherwise it's going to be a long season. The key is the running game, and more specifically blocking by the offensive line. This game could go either way, depending on which Sylmar shows up.

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  (2-1) at NEWBURY PARK (2-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Jordan LaSecla, QB, Newbury Park

Sophomore is taking away the pain from Rudy Carpenter transferring. He threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns last week.

Key stat: 81

Points allowed by Newbury Park through three games. That might not seem to be anything to brag about, but last year it was 136 points through the same period.

Why Simi Valley will win: RB Laydell Shelton is one of the most underrated players in the Marmonte League. The Pioneers are a balanced offense that can also pass the ball. The defense limited Channel Islands - a team Newbury Park lost to 46-39 - to 13 points last week.

Why Newbury Park will win: The way Newbury Park can gun the ball, it's in most games. The defense isn't anything to write home about but is improving. The return of healthy WR Bryce Winter has given Newbury Park a lift.

Last week: Simi Valley beat Channel Islands of Oxnard 15-13; Newbury Park beat Buena of Ventura 34-26

Perspective: Simi Valley has a 20-game Marmonte League losing streak. This is one of three league games - with Royal of Simi Valley and Calabasas - that the Pioneers have a legitimate shot of getting a victory.

Outlook: Simi Valley had won one game in the past three years but already has two victories. If Simi Valley can slow Newbury Park's passing game, the long Marmonte losing streak will end.

No. 2 CANYON (3-0) at HIGHLAND (1-1-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Jeff Briscoe, OL, Canyon

Briscoe's blocking must help to offset Highland of Palmdale's size and power on the defensive line, which is always one of Highland's strengths.

Key stat: 11.4

Canyon's Louis Montano's yards per carry (area-best 457 yards on 40 attempts), second-highest among regional large-school RBs with 300 yards or more.

Why Canyon will win: The way the team is rolling, Canyon would be a favorite against just about anyone. The team is averaging 46 points and hasn't given up more than one touchdown in a game. Canyon is coming off its most well-balanced victory against Etiwanda last week.

Why Highland will win: The team plays solid defense, particularly the secondary, which held Peninsula to 41 yards passing last week and has allowed an average of 63.3 yards a game. If Highland can keep the score low, force some turnovers and avoid silly mistakes, the team has enough talent to pull an upset.

Last week: Canyon beat Etiwanda 48-7; Highland tied Peninsula 14-14.

Perspective: Canyon is 9-3 against Golden League opponents since 1997, including six consecutive victories (three over Highland). Canyon leads the Highland series 6-1.

Outlook: Canyon looked sharp last week, as every reserve on the bench got into the game for at least one play for the third consecutive game. With such skill-position talent and a hard-hitting defense, Canyon would have to do a major backslide back·slide

SAUGUS (2-1) vs. ST. BONAVENTURE (3-0)

at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Matt Lee, RB, St. Bonaventure

Perhaps the fastest RB in Ventura County, he has rushed for a total of 400 yards the past two weeks.

Key stat: 14

Number of points Saugus scored before running a play on offense last week, but the team trailed 20-14 at that point.

Why Saugus will win: The odds are slim for Saugus, but St. Bonaventure has proved mildly vulnerable, giving up 54 points over the past two games - including 20 to lightly regarded Alemany of Mission Hills last week. If Saugus can break a few long touchdowns, and perhaps come through with some timely defensive plays, who knows?

Why St. Bonaventure will win: Frankly, the team is a bully, winning 58 of its past 59 games, including a 41-34 victory over Hart two weeks ago. No opponent this season has been able to hold St. Bonaventure to less than five touchdowns in a game.

Last week: Saugus beat Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  36-35; St. Bonaventure beat Alemany 49-20.

Perspective: Bad things happen when Saugus faces private schools; it is 3-15 against them since 1991.

Outlook: Saugus has come through with a couple of exciting comeback victories but the team's chances do not look good tonight. St. Bonaventure, a state power, is simply a class above. Teams that beat Hart don't lose to Saugus, period. If Saugus pulls off a victory, it might be considered the biggest upset in school history.

UPLAND Upland, city (1990 pop. 63,374), San Bernardino co., S Calif., in a citrus-fruit region at the foot of the San Gabriel Mts.; inc. 1906. Citrus fruits and grapes are packed and processed in the city. Paint, orchard heaters, auto parts, and feed products are also made.  (3-0) at No. 9 PALMDALE (2-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: JaVonte Holmes, QB, Palmdale

Holmes was effective as a runner and a receiver last week against Notre Dame, but Palmdale needs him to do better than 49 yards passing to have a chance this week.

Key stat: 5

Difference in total offensive yards between Palmdale (292) and Notre Dame (297) in last week's 35-21 victory by Notre Dame. Notre Dame also had more turnovers (3-2), but a blocked punt led to an early touchdown.

Why Upland will win: Upland has outscored its opponents 123-28 this season. Palmdale allowed 35 points to Notre Dame this week and will have to shut down Upland's high powered offense.

Why Palmdale will win: Notre Dame was the first tough opponent Palmdale has played all season and they'll be ready for the intensity better this week. Coach Jeff Williams For the poker player, see .

Jeff Williams (born June 6, 1972 in Canberra) is an Australian-born, left-handed pitcher for the Hanshin Tigers baseball team.
has focused practice all week on execution and fundamentals to avoid the mistakes that cost Palmdale last week.

Last week: Palmdale lost 35-21 to Notre Dame; Upland beat Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley Moreno Valley (mərē`nō), city (1990 pop. 118,779), Riverside co., S Calif., inc. 1984. In 1990, Moreno Valley was California's fastest-growing city, with a population increase of more than 300% between 1980 and 1990, but major reductions  58-12.

Perspective: Palmdale rallied from a 7-0 deficit last year to defeat Upland 21-14 as senior QB Jacob McCravey completed5 of his last 6 passes, including two touchdowns.

Outlook: Upland is the No. 5 team in the Southern Section Div. II poll and vastly improved from last season. Palmdale must recover from last week's disappointing loss but certainly has the talent to win the game. If the Falcons have turnover problems again, Upland will make them pay.
