THIS WEEK: TOURNAMENT IS ROYAL TEST : TOP VOLLEYBALL TEAMS MEET.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

Any doubts about the strength of this year's Royal High girls' volleyball team could be put to rest this weekend. The Highlanders are one of 20 teams playing in the 21st annual Royal tournament, scheduled for Saturday at Royal and Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  High.

``It should be a pretty good indicator (for league),'' Royal coach Bob Ferguson said.

Other volleyball powers such as Ventura, Dos Pueblos and Upland will also be on hand.

``It's got some good ones,'' Ferguson said. ``I'm looking forward to it. I think each pool has at least two strong teams in it.''

The Highlanders won last year's tournament with a victory over La Canada.

The tournament features a match-play format (best two out of three) instead of pool play.

Before the Highlanders shift their focus to the tournament, however, they will try to improve to 3-0 in league when they host Moorpark on Thursday. The 6 p.m. contest will be Royal's first in at least 15 years against the Marmonte League's newest team.

Royal is coming off a silver division championship at the Orange County tournament this past weekend. The Highlanders were sent to the consolation bracket after losing their first few games, but came back with four straight wins against teams such as Laguna, Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, city (1990 pop. 181,519), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast, across from Santa Catalina Island, in an oil-producing area; inc. 1909. Senior setter Annette Wilson made great strides in adjusting to her new position while others continued to excel. Senior outside hitter Courtney Guerra, who set a school record earlier in the season with 41 kills against Harvard-Westlake, pounded 67 kills during the two-day tournament.

``That was pretty sweet,'' Ferguson said. ``The team came together and made a lot of strides. That was big. We are really strong. This was a really good experience for us.''
