THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  vs. CRESCENTA VALLEY The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. , at Glendale H.S., 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK: Look for a high-scoring shootout Shootout

of Thousand Oaks against Hudson Gossard.

Olson, a 6-foot-5 left-hander regarded by many as the nation's No. 1 quarterback, passed for 2,704 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior. The 5-10, unrecruited Gossard passed for 2,671 yards and 31 touchdowns.

In his first varsity start a year ago, Gossard outperformed Olson to carry the Falcons to a 24-20 opening victory. He passed for 279 yards, compared to Olson's 202.

Thousand Oaks (5-6) continued its early skid by losing its first five games but rebounded to win the next five before falling in the first round of the Div. III playoffs. Bolstered by Dave Anderson Dave Anderson might refer to:

KEEP AN EYE ON: Crescenta Valley's Brent Clissold. He made eight field goals last year, including a late 18-yarder against Thousand Oaks. The region's No. 2-ranked PK could decide the game.

NOTES: Crescenta Valley's Dan Moody Daniel James Moody, Jr. (June 1, 1893–May 22, 1966) was a U.S. political figure and Democrat. He served as the governor of Texas between 1927 and 1931, and is best remembered in Texas history as a reformer and an opponent of the Ku Klux Klan. , an all-league DB last year, is Gossard's prime target. He caught 12 passes for two TDs as the Falcons' fifth-leading receiver in 2000.

HART vs. BANNING at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , 7:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK: This Southern Section-City matchup features schools of national prominence that have never played each other.

Three-time Div. III champion Hart (12-2 last year) and defending City champion Banning (8-6) have opposite styles.

Hart employs a wide-open passing game, and QB Matt Moore replaces Daily News Player of the Year Kyle Matter, now at Stanford. Moore completed 19 passes as a backup last year, busying himself as an All-Southern Section DB. Four key WRs return, led by Chris Steck (53 catches, nine TDs) and Keith Howell (38 catches, six TDs).

Banning plays power football. A.J. Tuitele rushed for more than 1,300 yards in eight games as a sophomore. He loves to run behind OL Fred Matua Fred Matua (born January 14, 1984 in Wilmington, California) is an American football guard who is currently a practice squad player for the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League.  (6-3, 285), a consensus All-American.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Hart RB Tim Gregory. The speedy senior, recovering from his second knee surgery in less than a year, is starting tonight. ``He's 100 percent,'' coach Mike Herrington said.

NOTES: Hart is No. 6 and Banning No. 8 in Cal-Hi Sports' Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  rankings. ... Hart has won six section championships and Banning has won 11 City titles.

 at TAFT, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK: Taft has an opportunity to avenge last year's loss to the Cougars in the City Championship quarterfinals. But with so many new faces in Taft's starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

, coach Troy Starr is downplaying the ``payback'' angle.

``It's a different year and a new group,'' Starr said. ``I won't try to use last year as a motivating factor. You can't really do that in high school football.''

Taft's Steve Smith caught 93 passes for 1,597 yards and scored 18 touchdowns last year, one of the most impressive seasons for a WR in regional history. But with inexperienced junior QB Cary Dove replacing All-City selection Ricky Clausen (now at LSU LSU Louisiana State University

KEEP AN EYE ON: Taft RB Justin Tryon, a Littlerock transfer who has earned a starting spot.

``Justin looks like he's going to be exceptional,'' Starr said.

NOTES: Taft sophomore Ryan Carew, a key RB on Taft's undefeated JV last season, has transferred to Sylmar, joining fellow Taft transfer Clarence Simpson, Sylmar's starting QB.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER GAMES

LITTLEROCK at BURROUGHS, 7:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK: Two teams apparently going in different directions. Burroughs, bolstered by LB transfer Gabriel Moise, is one of the region's most improved teams, and rebuilding Littlerock lacks experienced players and begins the season without an established RB for the first time in many years.

Moise, a 6-3, 230-pounder from Florida, is the kind of hitter who can help turn a team around. He had 13 sacks as a junior last season and coach Keith Knoop has built the defense around him.

Littlerock QB Joe Fields Joseph Charles Fields, Jr. (born November 14, 1953 in Woodbury, New Jersey) is a former professional American football center and guard who played 14 seasons in the National Football League from 1975 to 1988 for the New York Jets and the New York Giants.  is a returning starter. But he completed just 44 passes with two TDs and nine INTs as the Lobos went 3-7 last season. All-Golden League LB Juan Wilson and converted WR Ray Battle are the RBs in the Lobos' new double-wing offense.

, who rushed for 1,012 yards and scored 12 TDs as a junior. Burroughs QB Adam Freeman completed just seven passes as a backup last year, but he impressed during summer passing competitions.

ALEMANY at SAN FERNANDO, 7:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK: This neighborhood rivalry got off to a wild start last year when San Fernando rallied to win 28-25 in Week 1.

Expect another close game, but give the edge to San Fernando because the Tigers have more returning impact players, led by QB Ruben Nevarez, WR Ramon Perry and LB Will German.

Nevarez passed for 1,613 yards and 16 touchdowns in an injury-plagued junior season. Perry had 51 receptions and 17 TDs, and he's one of the region's most dangerous kick returners. German, a three-year starter, placed seventh in the state as a 171-pound wrestler as a junior. He's now 20 pounds heavier.

Alemany RB Albert Griffin, an All-Daily News LB as a junior, is one of the area's most athletic two-way standouts. Jason Lance, a 6-7 TE, led the Indians with 17 receptions last year.

Alemany QB A.J. Anthony struggled learning the position last year (completing 39 percent for 905 yards and eight TDs).

SAUGUS at ROYAL, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK: Both teams return key starters on both sides and are expecting substantial improvement. A victory here could set the tone for the season.

Royal should have the edge if Colorado-bound QB James Cox and RB Greg Morris get untracked. Cox passed for 1,447 yards and 16 TDs without a go-to WR last year; this year he has one in Robert Davis, a 6-4 speedster speed·ster

Saugus QB Chris Ahlheim is confident after passing for 1,565 yards and 11 TDs in 2000. Brandon McCullough, who started the season on JV last year, returns after leading Saugus with 695 yards rushing and 10 TDs.

BIRMINGHAM at CANOGA PARK, 7 p.m.

City Section teams meet in what has been a close matchup the last two seasons.

Last year, Birmingham had its best season in recent memory and opened with a narrow victory over Canoga Park. Birmingham returns most of its key players such as QB Scott Jensen and WR Ramal ramal /ra·mal/ (ra´m'l) pertaining to a ramus.

CHAMINADE vs. PARACLETE at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. , 7:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK: This one is tough to gauge. Small-school power Paraclete has won four consecutive section championships, but the Spirits haven't seen many opponents such as high-powered Chaminade.

Div. XII Paraclete will need a few breaks and RB Curtis Brown, fifth on the region's all-time career rushing list, to break a long TD or two for a shot at victory.

Otherwise, Div. III Chaminade, much more athletic and sophisticated, should win convincingly behind QB Erik Vose, RB Chris Abichaker, TE Jesse Taylor and WR Jose Jones. Vose passed for 1,893 yards and 22 TDs as a sophomore last season. Jones had 60 receptions and scored 15 TDs.

AQUINAS vs. MONTCLAIR PREP at L.A. Valley College, 7:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK: Montclair Prep must stop consensus All-American RB Glenn O'Haeri to win.

O'Haeri was held to 56 yards in Montclair Prep's 21-0 victory last year. But he rolled up the yardage yard·age 1

against everyone else, totaling 2,546 yards and 36 TDs to carry Aquinas to the Div. XIII title. He's the No. 8 RB in the nation, according to SuperPrep magazine.

Expect Montclair Prep LBs Robert Lewis and Marcus Franco and standout DB Jason Spratt to key on O'Haeri every down.

Offensively, the Div. XII-finalist Mounties have the same look under 25-year coach George Giannini. As usual, they have an elusive RB - this year it's junior Dal Johnson - and a massive OL, featuring 297-pound Matt Jacobs and 285-pound Robert Pennington.

PALISADES Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  at CLEVELAND, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK: Cleveland usually is unpredictable, but the Cavaliers have beaten Palisades three years in a row. Considering Cleveland returns most of its key players and Palisades is rebuilding, expect the streak to continue.

Cleveland QB Antwine Barfield (1,076 yards, nine TDs) has a fast, dependable WR in Randy Bundy (32 catches, six TDs), a big blocker in 330-pound, three-year starter Andre Berkeley and an elusive RB in Ronnie Lyons (325 yards, four TDs).

Palisades graduated record-setting David Koral and his three top WRs, all of whom are playing major-college football this season. Longtime coach Ron Price resigned after the season, three returning starters transferred and only seven players return. But Loyola QB Walter Cale is a solid transfer and RB Damian Bryant should contribute.
