GAMES OF THE WEEK

No. 1 NOTRE DAME Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  (9-0) at No. 7 CHAMINADE (8-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Key stat: 30. Points scored by Chaminade of West Hills in its past six meetings with Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, which has scored 269.

Outlook: Chaminade the past two years has played well early in the season, then struggled down the stretch. In 2003, the Eagles won six in a row, then lost three of their final five. Last season, Chaminade won six of its first seven, then finished with a four-game losing streak.

This year's team rebounded from a season-opening loss to Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  to win eight in a row, setting up a showdown for the Mission League title with defending champion defending champion n (SPORT) → defensor/a m/f del título

In the past six meetings, Chaminade hasn't scored more than 10 points in a single game and has been shut out twice.

RIO MESA (6-3) at CAMARILLO (6-3), 7 p.m.

Key stat: 9. Consecutive Pacific View League victories for Rio Mesa of Oxnard since a 21-13 loss to Camarillo in 2003.

Outlook: These teams have accounted for the past two Pacific View titles, so it seems only right that they're squaring off to determine this year's league champion.

Rio Mesa defeated Camarillo 48-17 in front of more than 4,000 in last year's league finale to finish with an undefeated regular-season record for the first time in program history. It also was the Spartans' first outright league championship since winning the Frontier crown in 1983.

Rio Mesa shared the Channel League title in 1985.

Camarillo's 2003 victory also led to a share of the league title, with Hueneme of Oxnard.

Camarillo lost its first three games and has rebounded to win six in a row. Rio Mesa opened the season with three losses in four games, and it has since put together five-game winning streak.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER GAMES

No. 16 ROYAL (5-4) at SIMI VALLEY (5-4), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Five weeks into the season, these teams looked like they might contend for the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  title, with Simi Valley basking in its first 5-0 start in program history and Royal of Simi Valley hungry to defend its championship.

Since then, the Pioneers have dropped four in a row, and the Highlanders' playoff hopes rest on tonight's game.

Moorpark and Newbury Park are the only Marmonte teams to have clinched Southern Section Div. IV playoff berths, and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. , Agoura and Royal are in the hunt for the league's final two automatic entries.

No. 12 NEWBURY PARK (7-2) at No. 15 THOUSAND OAKS (7-2), Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Royal of Simi Valley relied on Daniel Mosier's running last year to win the Marmonte League title. If Newbury Park secures a share of its first championship since 1998, the Panthers will do it through the air.

Two of the state's top QBs will be on display in this one, with Newbury Park's Jordan LaSecla and Thousand Oaks' Ryan Cloney having thrown for more than 5,000 yards and attempted almost 600 passes between them. LaSecla is fourth in the state with 28 TDs and Cloney is 10th with 23.

Thousand Oaks could win a share of the title with a victory and a Westlake win over Moorpark. If there is a three-way tie, several league tiebreakers would be needed to determine how the teams would represent the league in the playoffs. Newbury Park beat Moorpark, which defeated Thousand Oaks.

BURBANK (3-6) at BURROUGHS (3-6), 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Although the annual ``Big Game'' will continue, this will be the last meeting in the Foothill League. Both schools move next year to the Pacific League.

A crowd of more than 10,000 is expected at Burroughs of Burbank's Memorial Field, which has played host to several memorable games in the series since 1949.

Burroughs had a 10-game winning streak over Burbank before losing the past two years, and the Indians hold a 35-21 advantage in the series.

The victor would have an outside shot at securing one of the four at-large berths in Southern Section Div. II, although the loser of the Saugus-Valencia game would receive priority, based on beating the Bulldogs and Indians.

Burroughs RB Thomas Kyle has 1,043 yards and 11 TDs. Burbank RB Marcus Hood has 903 yards and 9 TDs.

KEY NUMBER

Victories for Burbank in its past 64 Foothill League games, two of them against rival Burroughs of Burbank.

HOOVER (3-6) at GLENDALE (1-8), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Although both teams have been eliminated from Southern Section Div. III playoff contention, the annual ``Battle for the Victory Bell'' will be as competitive as ever, with both teams trying to avoid going winless in the Pacific League.

It's one of the longest-standing rivalries in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , and Glendale leads the series 43-31-2, although the Nitros' four-game series winning streak was snapped by Hoover of Glendale last season.

Glendale has lost six in a row this season and is 2-17 under second-year coach Ted Amorosi Amorosi is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Benevento in the Italian region Campania, located about 45 km northeast of Naples and about 30 km northwest of Benevento. Although Hoover has lost four straight, the Tornadoes have won three games in successive years under coach Dennis Hughes after going 3-35-2 in 2000-03.

Glendale RB James Clay (1,306 yards, 9 TDs) leads the area with 228 rushing attempts. Hoover features a two-back system with Alex Pantoja (892 yards, 11 TDs) and Terran Sprewell (651 yards, 6 TDs).

SAUGUS (4-5) vs. No. 8 VALENCIA (6-3), Friday at COC See chip on chip. , 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: It was thought this game would have playoff implications, but it's now clear both teams almost surely will qualify, win or lose. If Saugus wins, it qualifies as the Foothill League's third-place team.

If Valencia loses, it must go through the formality of applying for one of four Div. II at-large berths; the Vikings would be because a .500 record is the No. 1 criteria, and there are only three other potential .500 teams that can finish worse than third among the four Div. II leagues.

If Saugus loses, the only Div. II team with a potentially better record aiming for an at-large berth would be Diamond Bar (4-5-1), but the Brahmas can finish, at best, fifth in the Sierra League The examples and perspective in this article or section may not represent a worldwide view of the subject.

, so fourth-place Saugus likely would gain the final spot.

Valencia was ranked as high as No. 2 in Div. II but has fallen to No. 7 after losing two in a row.

L.A. BAPTIST (4-3-1) vs. VILLAGE CHRISTIAN (6-3), Friday at Kennedy HS, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Although the rivals are no longer in the same league nor division, it won't minimize the intensity of the annual ``Bible Bowl'' showdown,

one of Southern California's top small-school rivalries.

Village Christian of Sun Valley, which needs a victory to strengthen its case for an at-large berth in Southern Section Div. XI after finishing third in the four-team Olympic League, can add to its resume with a win over Alpha League champion L.A. Baptist of North Hills, which competes in Div. XII. The winner receives a football attached to a butcher's block.

Village Christian beat L.A. Baptist 42-20 in the Div. XII final two years ago.

The Crusaders are led by RBs Chris Handy (756 yards, 11 TDs) and Perry Gallagher (519 yards, 6 TDs). L.A. Baptist QB Tyler Robertson has thrown for 855 yards and 13 TDs.

 (5-3) at No. 17 KENNEDY (8-1), 7 p.m.

Outlook: It might be difficult to believe that a team as successful as Kennedy of Granada Hills, which has lost only to undefeated Sylmar, could be in danger of not qualifying among the top 16 teams in the City Section playoffs, but that's the situation, and so the Cougars need a victory over defending Valley Mission League co-champion San Fernando.

It operates mostly in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either.  and the Southern Section Div. Since the league expanded to eight teams in 2002, the Musketeers are tied with Westlake for the most Marmonte victories (20) and have qualified for the playoffs every year - but still no title. That could change tonight: Moorpark, with a victory over the Warriors, can do no worse than share the championship, and it would win outright with a victory and a Thousand Oaks win over Newbury Park.
