THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

GAME OF THE DAY

HART OF NEWHALL (7-4) vs. MISSION VIEJO Mission Vi·e·jo

A community of southern California southeast of Irvine. It is mainly residential. Population: 96,300.
(11-0) at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Ryan Wolfe Ryan Wolfe is a fictional character in the show , portrayed by American actor Jonathan Togo. Characterization
As portrayed by Togo, Ryan Wolfe is a man driven to succeed. He displays a desire a to impress his superiors coupled with ambition (c.f.
, WR, Hart.

Wolfe (85 receptions, nine TDs) needs four receptions to eclipse Chris Hite's 1988 school single-season record of 88.

Why Hart will win: Hart has played Mission Viejo tough over the past two years, losing 13-6 in the 2002 Div. II title game, and winning 25-7 in last year's Div. II title game.

Why Mission Viejo will win: The team isn't ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in the nation (by Student Sports) for nothing. Mission Viejo has won 52 of its past 53 games, losing only to Hart.

Outlook: Two of California's most heated rivals face off in this showdown that figures to draw more than 8,000. Mission Viejo is the heavy favorite. But if there's one team that knows how to beat Mission Viejo, it's Hart.

RIO MESA of Oxnard (11-0) at AGOURA (8-3) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Mark Lawrence Mark H. Lawrence, is the principal trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He was appointed to this position in 1974.

Lawrence was educated at the University of Michigan and the Curtis Intitute of Music. His teachers have included Carlos Rivera, Allen H.
, WR, Agoura

Standout player was injured last time the teams met.

Why Rio Mesa will win: Rio Mesa's defense really did a number on Agoura in a 36-16 victory in Week 3. QB Chris Gagua seems finally to be rolling after taking over at midseason because of an injury.

Why Agoura will win: The Chargers were missing five key starters when Rio Mesa upset them in the regular season. All of the players are back now, and Agoura hasn't lost since the shocking last-second kick return by Westlake in Week 6.

Outlook: It's difficult to beat a team twice in one season, especially when that team is healthy the second time around. Rio Mesa has earned the right to be the favorite but will need to be at its best.

SAN LUIS OBISPO San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  (9-1) at ROYAL OF SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  (8-3) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Kevin Harrington Kevin Harrington (born 4 September 1959 in Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian actor who is perhaps best known for his role as David Bishop on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. , QB, Royal

The junior struggled in his first playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

, then left in the fourth quarter with an injury. He will need to have a better game for Royal to win.

Why San Luis Obispo will win: Ranked No. 1 in the division for part of the season, San Luis Obispo has a balanced offense and great special teams play. RB Phil Garza is just behind Mosier with 1,951 yards rushing.

Why Royal will win: The Highlanders seemed like a team of destiny in the first round, getting a turnover with a minute remaining when the game seemed lost. This might just be their year.

Outlook: Royal shot itself in the foot with turnovers and penalties last week but came out on top with some luck at the end. That won't be good enough this time. Royal needs to play near mistake-free ball to win.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER GAMES

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  (8-3) at VENTURA (9-2) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Ryan Cloney, QB, Thousand Oaks

A sophomore passing for more than 500 yards against the third-seeded team just doesn't happen. Cloney is something special.

KEY NUMBER: 8

School records Thousand Oaks broke in the first round.

Why Thousand Oaks will win: With Cloney, WR Matt Luft, WR Jon Hall and RB Jack Boger, the Lancers lanc·er

might have the most dangerous offense in Div. IV. Thousand Oaks had 587 total yards last week.

Why Ventura will win: Since losing to Camarillo in Week 1, Ventura has won nine of 10 games, including victories over four playoff teams. The only loss came to top-seeded St. Bonaventure of Ventura.

Outlook: Ventura already beat two Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. But Thousand Oaks is getting hot at the right time and has the potential to go all the way to the division final.

LAKEWOOD (10-1) vs. LOYOLA OF LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  (9-2) at Glendale High, 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Casey Frost, QB, Loyola

Completed all nine of his passes, including a 60-yard touchdown pass, for 163 yards and rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown last week in Loyola's 28-14 victory over Edison of Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, city (1990 pop. 181,519), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast, across from Santa Catalina Island, in an oil-producing area; inc. 1909. It manufactures aerospace vehicles, aircraft parts, optical instruments, and heat transfer equipment. . On the season, Frost has passed for 1,133 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 799 yards and 10 touchdowns..

KEY NUMBER: 19

Consecutive trips to the quarterfinals by Loyola. During that span, the Cubs have advanced to the semifinals 11 times and the championship game six times.

Why Lakewood will win:The Lancers are ranked fifth in the state by Cal-Hi Sports largely because of their defense. All-American LB Luther Brown Luther Brown (born April 7, 1987 in Lakewood, California, USA) is an American college football linebacker at the University of Southern California (USC). Brown redshirted his freshman year because of a back injury suffered in the 2005 USC spring game.  is rated among the top recruits in the country. Lakewood hasn't allowed more than 22 points in any of its 11 games and has only given up 91 points all season.

Why Loyola will win: After a disappointing loss to Santa Margarita Santa Margarita ("Saint Margaret") may refer to:
  • Santa Margarita (shipwreck), a shipwreck off the coast of Florida near Key West.
  • Rancho Santa Margarita, California, United States
in the regular-season finale, Frost got the Cubs back on track last week for what could be another deep playoff run. Loyola always seems to play its best football in the playoffs and made a habit of upsetting highly regarded opponents in the playoffs last season on its way to the Div. I title.

Outlook: Loyola has beaten Lakewood all three times the schools have met, most recently in 2002 when Loyola beat the Lancers 24-17 in the first round of the playoffs. This is a much tougher second-round opponent than third-seeded Loyola would have hoped for. But if Frost and senior FB George Hypolite have big games, Loyola should prevail.

UPLAND (9-2) at CANYON OF CANYON COUNTRY (10-1) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Will Brogan, QB, Canyon.

Burdened with the task of replacing Parade All-American Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. Longshore was an Elite-11 quarterback in high school and a 4-star recruit rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com."How Far ...  (now at Cal), Brogan has developed into one of the division's most efficient passers. He's completed 56.1 percent of his passes for 2,074 yards, 19 TDs and just five INTs.

KEY NUMBER: 2

Number of road games Upland has played this season.

Why Upland will win: Upland QB Daniel Millus (2,679 yards, 72.3 pct., 28 TDs) presents a lot of problems. He passed for 404 yards last week in a first-round victory over Capistrano Valley.

Why Canyon will win: A loss would ruin a chance to play the Mission Viejo-Hart winner in the semis next week. Nobody wants to miss that. Canyon is the more balanced team, with RB Justin Williams For the basketball player, see .

Outlook: Two high-scoring teams go head to head in what figures to be an exciting, crowd-pleasing shootout Shootout

DOMINGUEZ of Compton (10-1) at NO. 10 LANCASTER (9-2) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Sherman Myles, LB, Dominguez

Has 19 sacks in 11 games this season, including five last week against Chaminade of West Hills. Lancaster must turn his aggressiveness against him and force him to overpursue..

KEY NUMBER: 11

Turnovers by Dominguez in its past two games.

Why Dominguez will win: The Dons have a power running game that is tough to shut down. Four players - Elijah Wesson (891 yards, 11 TDs), James Raby (810 yards, seven TDs), Darryl Crummie crum·mie

Why Lancaster will win: Lancaster's defense has been getting better every week. It's allowed 15 points or less in nine of 11 games this year and in five of the past six games.

Outlook: Dominguez is the No. 2 seed in Div. III so it should be a heavy favorite. But Lancaster has shown an ability to challenge top teams - last season Lancaster gave eventual champion Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  its closest game of the post season (35-28) - and shouldn't be intimidated.

VALENCIA (10-1) vs. CHINO HILLS (9-2) at Ayala High of Chino Hills, 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Anthony DeFilippo, LB, Valencia.

DeFilippo has 18 sacks, two shy of the unofficial Foothill League record of 20 (Brandon Fuselier, Valencia, 2000).

KEY NUMBER: 5

Number of times Valencia's Shane Vereen has scored four TDs or more over the past six weeks.

Why Chino Hills will win: The home-field advantage looms large, and Valencia gets caught looking ahead.

Why Valencia will win: More talent. QB Michael Herrick has passed for 3,127 yards and 27 TDs. WR Shane Morales (47 catches, six TDs) is one of four players with 44 catches or more.

Outlook: Valencia figures to be a strong favorite against upstart Chino Hills, which includes seniors for the first time this season and hasn't faced as many tough opponents. However, Valencia isn't taking this game lightly, and Chino Hills coach Terry Roche is a proven winner who won four section titles at Diamond Bar.
