THIS NORTH POLE STORY GOES SOUTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

Fat, but not as funny ...

More than a decade removed from his initial appearance as Father Christmas in the modestly entertaining ``The Santa Clause,'' Allen once again dons the red togs and 75-pound fat suit. But this time he doesn't bring a sense of teddy bear charm to the iconic role. He's just a nice man with a white beard. There's no imagination in the time-bending plot, either, with the exception of a brief stopover in an alternate reality where Frost reigns supreme as Christmas' head honcho Honcho

Short is far too gifted a comedian to be dallying with such juiceless material, but his Jack Frost is, in a way, the film's central character. Rejected by the Council of Legendary Figures for his unabashed Santa-envy, Frost resembles the Satan of Milton's ``Paradise Lost,'' a pitiful, strangely sympathetic figure whose original sin was to venture higher than his lot, thinking it better to reign in hell than serve in heaven. Unfortunately, all literary allusions end there.

``The Santa Clause 3'' is holiday filler, stuffed with unearned emotion and trite sentimentality. The good news is it runs just over and hour and a half, which means parents won't have to glance nervously at their watches. The succinctness of the running time is some kind of Christmas miracle.
