THIRD QUARTER EARNINGS CLIMB 32 PERCENT TO $.45 PER SHARE FOR HEALTH SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL ON 19 PERCENT REVENUE INCREASE.

: HQ) today reported a 32 percent increase in earnings per share for the third quarter ended September September: see month.  30, 1994, to $.45 per share up from $.34 per share in the comparable year earlier period.

Net income for the three months ended September 30, 1994 rose 34 percent to $22,415,000, compared with $16,762,000 in the third quarter of 1993. In 1994's third quarter, revenues climbed 19 percent, to $580,837,000, up from $488,373,000 in the three months ended September 30, 1993.

The revenue increase was fueled by a 15 percent enrollment increase in the company's health plans, to 1,439,013 at September 30, 1994, compared with 1,256,219 at the end of the same period a year ago. Enrollment increased 7,719 since June June: see month.  30, 1994, and, since the beginning of 1994, Health Systems International has added 140,013 new members.

For the first nine months of 1994, revenues rose 18 percent to $1,716,640,000, from $1,453,061,000 in the comparable period in 1993. Net income for the first nine months of 1994 was $64,196,000, a 52 percent increase over the $42,312,000 earned in the comparable period in 1993.

Earnings per share in the first nine months of 1994 were $1.29, again a 52 percent rise over the $.85 per share recorded in the first nine months of 1993.

 --medical costs as a percent of premium revenue) reached 80.2 percent in 1994's third quarter. In the third quarter of 1993, the MLR was 78.0 percent. In the second quarter of 1994, the company's MLR was 80.6 percent and it was 80.3 percent through the first nine months of 1994.

"It is our goal for the MLR to remain relatively stable, while expecting some slight upward pressure as a result of rapid growth in the Medicare products," Dr. Hasan said. "We believe these are appropriate levels of MLR and levels our customers demand."

In the third quarter of 1994, the company's MLR on its commercial HMO plans was 78.9 percent, while the MLR on its Medicare plans was 88.4 percent.
