``You have to wear protective clothing, know how to switch the machines off and where to cut the wires,'' said Kern County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Lackey. ``It takes technical knowledge to do this.''

Sheriff's officials said the thief entered the farm on Tehachapi Willows Springs Road one mile south of Oak Creek Oak Creek, city (1990 pop. 19,513), Milwaukee co., SE Wis., a suburb of Milwaukee, on Lake Michigan; inc. 1955. The thief's actions disconnected the wind farm from California's power network, and some of the windmills have yet to be reconnected, said Joel Brust, owner of Windsong Energy.

Stolen were high-voltage breakers, devices called contactors and copper wire.

``I think it was the same person who stole copper wiring from us last year,'' Brust said. ``It was the same time of the year.''

``We're normally there twice a day,'' he said. ``We didn't know for two days because of the ice and snow on the roads.''

Since 1990, Brust has owned the farm, which consists of 50 wind turbines.

``I won't be able to bring some of these turbines back online,'' he said. ``It will be some time before I can recover the loss financially.''

Brust is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the individual or individuals involved. He can be reached at (805) 822-3210.
