``Les Miserables,'' written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michael Schonberg, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, will star Canyon senior Sam Hyde as Jean Valjean. Valjean is a prisoner who, upon his release, works hard to redeem his life and takes pity upon the masses who endure poverty while the upper class in France flourishes in the early 1800s. Valjean, always under the watchful eye of Constable Javert, played by Alan Cutler, helps Fantine, a prostitute played by Mary Deagon. In failing health, Fantine urges Valjean to raise her daughter Cossette, who must first be rescued from the clutches of the drunken innkeeper An individual who, as a regular business, provides accommodations for guests in exchange for reasonable compensation.
