THEY GOT THE ANSWERS; VALLEY TEENS WIN SCIENCE COMPETITION.

Two teams from North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  took each other on Saturday in the final round of the annual Science Bowl, and the school's Team A emerged victorious to win the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city title.

``I'm ecstatic,'' said Team A coach Koh Ikeda. ``I'm proud of my students. They worked really hard.'' He and his students celebrated with dinner at a Studio City restaurant.

A team members Iris Ahronowitz, Alexander Bellanca, Paul Laken, Vinly Eng and Nina Han will now compete in the national Science Bowl April 30-May 3 in Washington, D.C.

A North Hollywood High team won first place last year and took second in the national competition.

The Science Bowl is patterned after the College Bowl television game show, with questions in subjects such as physics, chemistry, astronomy, and earth and physical science. It was started in 1991 by the U.S. Department of Energy. The first Science Bowl in Los Angeles was held in 1993.

Saturday morning, the teams played in six divisions. The top schools from each division advanced to the double-elimination round in the afternoon.

Bill Nye ``the Science Guy,'' host of a nationally syndicated television program, moderated the final round. The final question dealt with the characteristics of an ionic solid.

El Camino Real High School El Camino Real High School (also known locally as "ECR" and by some more recently as "ELCO") is a public secondary school located in the Woodland Hills district of the San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California. , which has fielded the Los Angeles Unified School District's winning Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  team for the past four years, was a newcomer to the Science Bowl this year.

``El Camino did pretty well for their first time,'' said Walter Zeisl, a spokesman for the DWP.

The school's A team made it to the fifth round. ``I am so pleased and proud. They performed beyond expectation,'' said coach Gary Goodeliumas, who also teaches biology and anatomy. ``The team is mostly juniors so we're looking forward to coming back now that we know how to play the game.''

Each member of the winning team will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The school will receive $1,800 toward the purchase of science equipment.

North Hollywood Team B members are Jeff Zira, Tyler Rubin, Natalie Stein, David Yau and Erik Peterson. Their coach is Len Solof.

``There will definitely be more preparation, more cramming,'' Ikeda said. ``The regional competition really prepared us. We were competing against some of the finest high schools in Southern California.''

Two teams from U.S. Grant High School in Van Nuys took home $1,600 in prize money after they won a side contest held on Friday. Their mission: construct a bridge from Popsicle sticks.

Zeisl said that the North Hollywood team will be honored on the field at Dodger Stadium in June.
