It's not like they're simulating a war game. It's target shooting.''

For Pavlich, there's nothing else like it.

``It's the most fun thing you can do standing up,'' he said. ``It gives you a lot of satisfaction when you see a target and you hit it.''

It's also a chance for the gun makers to show off their wares. Shooters at each station use shotguns furnished by a sponsor.

While recreational shooting and gun ownership is sometimes controversial, Mitchell - who took over the 32-year-old club three years ago - said he's here to provide education and a sporting outlet for local gun owners. Even California Highway Patrol officers practice their marksmanship Marksmanship

Lydia Castagna swiftly picked off two targets - one on a gradual ascent while another flew up then curved in a steep drop in the distance. She and her husband have been shooting for 20 years, she said, and her 12-year-old son has also taken up the sport.

She said she enjoys it because everyone can be equal on the shooting range, with the right training and practice.

``It's not a sport of strength,'' said Castagna, 38 of Chatsworth. ``It's a sport of skill. ... And (the club) is a very respectful environment. I bring my kids, and I don't have to worry about anything.''

``This is all about fun,'' Mitchell said. ``It's about people having fun.''
