THEY'VE PASSED COLLEGE TESTS SO FAR, ROOKIES BARDEN AND SNYDER HAVE MADE THE GRADE.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Brian Barden Brian David Barden (born April 3, 1981 in Corvallis, Oregon) is a Major League Baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has played as a second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop.  got into a friendly debate about college- baseball-conference strength with some JetHawks teammates.

``The Pac-10 (stinks),'' a teammate shouted at Barden, an Oregon State alum. Another said, ``Conference USA Conference USA, officially abbreviated C-USA, is a college athletic conference whose member institutions are located within the Southern United States. The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I in all sports.  is the best.''

While never a regular player (he was Johnny Bench's backup catcher during the Big Red Machine years), he did play solid defense. .

``Not for a guy who comes out of a Division I school. He should be able to play here,'' Plummer said. ``You come out of good programs and play in high-caliber Division I, they should be able to compete, maybe not at high, but low-A ball.''

But by the end of this week, the JetHawks will have six players selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks This article is about the baseball team. For other uses, see Diamondback.

in the most recent major-league draft. Snyder (second round) and Barden (sixth) have been the most consistent players. But reliever Matthew Henrie (seventh, Clemson) has been an effective setup man.

The JetHawks also have utility player Grady Symonds (39th, Hawaii) and received reliever Billy Biggs (40th, West Virginia West Virginia, E central state of the United States. Biggs got chances to be Yakima's closer before his promotion. But Snyder and Barden had little if any seasoning before the Diamondbacks challenged them in advanced Single-A straight out of college.

Barden did play four games for Yakima but has been introduced to pro baseball mainly in the California League The California League is a minor league baseball league which operates throughout the state of California. Before 2002, it was classified as a "High-A" league, indicating its status as a Class A league with the highest level of competition within that classification, and the fifth , which features more experienced pitchers than on the college level.

Snyder was assigned to Lancaster right away. The quality of pitchers is what has struck him more than anything else.

``Every night you go out here, it'd be like facing a No. 1 guy in college. I've grown accustomed to it. '' said Snyder, a .348 hitter with 15 homers, 70 RBI for the Cougars. ``Guys up here try to get ahead with their fastball. It complements the rest of their pitches. In college, you see a lot more breaking stuff, backwards pitching.''

``In college, you've got your Friday-night starter, he's the cream of the crop,'' said Barden, who at Oregon State faced such aces as Stanford's Jeremy Guthrie Jeremy Shane Guthrie (born April 8, 1979) is a right-handed starting pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles.

``That's minor-league baseball. They're inconsistent,'' Plummer said. ``That's why they're down here. A guy can go out there and give up five runs one time we face them and the next time put it all together.

. The more they pitch, the better they get, if they're going higher. The same with a hitter, plate discipline. When they get their pitch, they don't miss it.''

Speaking of consistency, the 20-game hitting streak JetHawks first baseman Corey Myers had compiled through Monday is impressive to his manager.

``Anytime you get a 15- or 20-game hit streak, that's a good accomplishment,'' Plummer said.

Myers kept his streak intact with a new bat. During a groundout in his first plate appearance Monday, Myers' bat was splintered into two pieces. He hadn't used any other bat during the first 19 games in which he hit safely. But swinging a new piece of wood in the fifth inning, Myers dropped in a lazy line drive. The 1999 first-round pick was batting .442 (34 for 77) during his streak.

--Odds and ends: Myers (14 for 28) and Phil Stockman (eight shutout innings) swept Cal League batter and player of the week honors for the JetHawks. Stockman starts tonight's season finale against San Jose. ...

Lost amid the outstanding effort by Bonser in Monday's game was JetHawks right-hander Beltran Perez, whose seven solid innings (eight strikeouts, no walks) was his second consecutive good outing since being sent down from Double-A El Paso. ...

The newest JetHawks pitcher, Biggs, has shown he can be versatile. During the just-completed college season at West Virginia, he led the Big East Conference with 10 complete games. The Diamondbacks wanted to lessen his work, so at Yakima, he was an effective closer with eight saves. Plummer said he'll probably be a setup man in Lancaster. ...

Plummer said pitcher Francisco Trejo will be placed on the disabled list sometime this week with arm soreness. ...

The JetHawks showed some pearly whites in last Saturday's game at The Hangar and brushed their way into the Guinness Book of World Records when 1,794 sets of teeth were simultaneously brushed, breaking the record of more than 1,500 established at the aptly named Great American Brush Off in Denver last year.
