QUARTZ HILL -- Nine Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Founded in 1964, it is the third oldest comprehensive high school in the Antelope Valley High School District (AVHSD).  students have been selected for the All-State Honor Band and All-Southern California Honor Band.

The nine budding musicians were chosen from thousands of students statewide who auditioned for spots on the band rosters.

``Usually, if we have one or two, it's outstanding. To have this many, I'm kind of floored,'' band director John McQuilkin said. ``They are hardworking and talented. Most of them are taking private lessons. It usually takes a little bit extra help to make it into one of these.''

McQuilkin said about 2,000 students auditioned for the state honor band by mailing in a CD recording of a performance of a college-level piece of music, and only 250 students were selected.

Three Quartz Hill students were accepted into the state honor band and all play clarinet.
