No need to look very hard for the culprit in the Angels' power shortage. Seattle pitcher Joel Pineiro was lights out, allowing just three hits over 7 2/3 innings and leading the last-place Mariners to an 8-1 victory infront of 27,952 at Safeco Field Coordinates:

Despite the unusual spelling of his first name, "Chone" is pronounced as "Shawn.  led off the game with a double, Pineiro retired 21 of the Angels' next 22 batters and earned his seventh win of the season.

``When you keep the ball down like he did and keep runners off base,'' said Figgins, ``it's going to be a long night.''

The Angels' lead in the American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League. The division currently has four teams, but it has had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment.  slipped to one game as Oakland defeated Cleveland, 2-0, on Monday.

The Angels hit eight home runs over three games against the AL Central-leading White Sox, but never came close to matching that production against Pineiro (7-9).

After the first inning, the Angels' only serious scoring opportunity came in the eighth when, trailing 6-1, they loaded the bases and knocked the right-hander from the game. But J.J. Conversely, Angels starter Ervin Santana Ervin Ramon Santana (born December 12, 1982 in La Romana, Dominican Republic) is a right-handed starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Career
Santana was a starting pitcher for the Angels' double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers early in 2005, where he
never seemed to get in a groove in 5 2/3 shaky innings. Santana (8-8) allowed eight hits, one intentional walk and hit two batters while giving up four runs.

``I made good pitches, they just hit the ball,'' said the 22-year-old rookie.

The Mariners also stole four bases off Santana and catcher Bengie Molina Benjamin José ("Bengie" or "Ben") Molina (born July 20 1974 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico) is the starting catcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. After being initially regarded as a "good glove, no hit" catcher, Molina has developed into one of the better , including a steal of home by Raul Ibanez on the front end of a double steal in the fifth inning.

Ibanez led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a fielder's choice grounder by Adrian Beltre. On a two-out pitch to Jose Lopez, Beltre took off from first base and Molina's throw to second was promptly cut off by second baseman Adam Kennedy when Ibanez broke for the plate. Kennedy's throw, however, was wide and allowed Ibanez to score on the double steal for a 4-1 Mariners lead.

Ibanez finished 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBI RBI

. Richie Sexson also homered for the Mariners.

It was the Angels' first loss in seven games in Seattle this season.

``It's woven into the fabric of baseball that when you're not winning yourself, you have an obligation to go out there and try to beat the team you're playing,'' said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

The Angels scored in the first inning when Figgins doubled down the right-field line, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Garret Anderson's sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 lead.

But in the third inning, Seattle took the lead for good when first baseman Sexson crushed a Santana fastball over the left-field wall for a two-run home run.

The Mariners increased their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Lopez was hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on a single to center by Yorvit Torrealba, who went 3 for 4.

Angels relievers Kevin Gregg and Greg Jones each allowed three hits and two runs in an inning of work.
