From the strange but true files. . . .

Canicatti is a Malocchio (Italian for bad eye), a legendary group of women born in Sicily and possessing the ability to cast spells on people simply by looking at them.

Peter Ciccarelli is a sports marketing Sport marketing (or "sports marketing" in the US) (1) the specific application of marketing principles and processes to sport products (e.g., teams, leagues, events, etc.) and (2) the the marketing of non-sports products (e.g., cigarettes, beer, long-distance phone service, etc.  specialist hired by San Jose State to promote the 1996 season. He knew of the Malocchio tradition and thought it'd make a great promotion. (He also figured the Spartans, 3-8 last year and picked to finish near the bottom of the Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly  Pacific Division this year, needed all the help they could get.)

He pitched the idea to San Jose State athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Bill Brennan

in February. They liked it, and the search began.

``Well, it started out as a search,'' Ciccarelli said. ``But now it's a personal quest to find her. I feel like Phillip Marlowe.''

Ciccarelli retained a private investigator after learning of Canicatti's existence, and together they scanned death certificates in all 50 states from 1986 to the present. Convinced she's alive, Ciccarelli attended an Italian festival in Monterrey and uncovered the last known sighting of Canicatti: two years ago in Hollister, Calif., where UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

``I know she's out there,'' Ciccarelli said. ``I may find her and she may tell me to stick in in my ear, that she won't do it. But San Jose State is already 0-2, so it can't hurt to try.''

Ciccarelli claims the evil-eye magic is legitimate, not some ancient mumbo-jumbo.

``She put a Malocchio on a woman in Monterrey in 1949, and within three years that woman had three brothers in prison and three grandchildren with their left foot two inches shorter than the right,'' he said. ``I know. I've seen one of them myself.

And how will Spartan opponents know when a spell has been cast, you ask? That's easy. They'll receive a six-pound wheel of cheese in the mail.

Big little one: There are a handful of games this season with direct national-title repercussions repercussions nplrépercussions fpl

repercussions nplAuswirkungen pl
, like Tennessee-Florida or Nebraska-Colorado, and a few games with subtle title significance. Saturday's Washington-Brigham Young matchup in Seattle is just that.

Simply put, a victory catapults the Cougars into the national title hunt. With an impressive victory over Texas A&M, a name quarterback in Steve Sarkisian (who threw 10 touchdowns in August) and the worst schedule among ranked teams, the Cougars have the basic ingredients to ascend the polls.

(BYU's 13-game schedule includes eight teams with losing records last year. The combined 1995 winning percentage of its '96 foes: 40.1.)

If the 14th-ranked Cougars win Saturday, they'll probably be 12-0 entering the season finale against Utah. More importantly, they'll climb the polls as higher-rated teams, playing real opponents, begin losing. A victory over Utah and in the WAC WAC (Women's Army Corps), U.S. army organization created (1942) during World War II to enlist women as auxiliaries for noncombatant duty in the U.S. army. Before 1943 it was known as the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby.  title game - they'll be favored in both - means a 14-0 record entering the bowl season.

Go Huskies.

Easy to find: The reasons for the Pac-10's fall from national dominance in recent years are both plentiful and complicated. But the bottom line is getting players - or not getting them. A mere glance at last week's top-10 box scores shows some of the homegrown talent that got away.

Tennessee's Terry Fair, a junior from Phoenix, had a crucial punt return touchdown against UCLA.

Ohio State's Mike Wiley, a freshman from San Diego, scored three touchdowns against Rice - a 49-yard run and receptions of 51 and 60 yards.

Nebraska's Kenny Cheatham, a sophomore from Phoenix, had a 30-yard touchdown catch against Michigan State.

Colorado's Rae Carruth, from Sacramento, is one of the best receivers in the Big 12 and scored a touchdown against Colorado State.

Ohio State's Joe Germaine, from Phoenix, had three touchdown passes against Rice and is battling Stanley Jackson for No. 1 quarterback duties. Arizona, notorious for poor quarterbacking, reportedly told Germaine it didn't want him.

Movin' in: Former Newbury Park quarterback Keith Smith is ready to claim the starting spot at Arizona. He played the entire second half at Iowa in place of starter Brady Batten and led the Wildcats to three scoring drives.

Smith completed 9 of 15 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown.

``It felt like my high school days,'' he said.

Then it felt good. Smith is the California high school California High School (commonly referred to as Cal High) is a public school located in San Ramon, California, a suburb of San Francisco, Oakland, and Silicon Valley. Around the Pac-10: Ryan Perry-Smith will start at quarterback for Oregon in place of the injured Tony Graziani. Perry-Smith, it's worth noting, completed 10 of 17 passes for 189 yards in the second half of a victory over Illinois last year.

Also scheduled to start for the Ducks is troubled but talented tailback Saladin McCullough, a junior from Pasadena Muir and El Camino Junior College who had his SAT scores challenged.

Oregon State threw a touchdown pass last week against Montana - equaling last year's total.

Who would have guessed? Arizona State scored 45 points against Washington and star receiver Keith Poole didn't catch a pass.
