THERMOTREX RECEIVES $2.2 MILLION TO CONTINUE ADAPTIVE OPTICS WORK

 SAN DIEGO, May 11, 1993 -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received $2.2 million, the last installment of a $4.5 million contract from the Office of Naval Research, to build an advanced optics system. The funding will be used to complete integrated testing of the finished system.
 Designed for use on ground-based telescopes, ThermoTrexUs (TTCUs) adaptive optics technology corrects image distortion caused by turbulence in the atmosphere so that objects in space appear sharp instead of blurred. The system consists of advanced electronics, image sensors, a segmented deformable mirror, and a computer built to perform 3.5 billion operations per second. The mirror, which consists of 500 separately controlled segments, is key to TTCUs technology. Controlled by the computer, the segments are quickly and independently positioned to cancel the distortion, which is measured using an artificial star Q a laser beam sent high into earth's atmosphere.
 "Upon completion of the contract, the system will be delivered to a site in Florida where we will help the government perform experiments using the system," said Ken Tang, senior vice president of ThermoTrex. "Astronomers at the University of Arizona are using our deformable mirrors on the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Tucson and have recorded images 10 times sharper than normal."
 ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion.
