THERMOTREX RECEIVES $1.2 MILLION TO CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PASSIVE MICROWAVE CAMERA

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN) has received $1.2 million from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory to continue development of the Passive Microwave Camera, which is designed to "see" through fog, clouds, and smoke. Part of a previously announced $3.6 million contract, this funding represents an option that the Army has chosen to award.
The Passive Microwave Camera being developed for the Army uses ambient (or passive) millimeter-wave radiation given off by objects in the camera's field of view to form a "synthetic" image that will appear on a video display. Under phase one of the contract, ThermoTrex is building a demonstration unit, which will be delivered once laboratory testing is completed. The Passive Microwave Camera has the potential to be used for covert all-weather surveillance, as a landing aid for helicopters, and in Army search-and-rescue operations.
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. The company also manufactures and markets imaging systems for early detection of breast cancer. In addition, ThermoTrex is developing other commercial product ?the medical imaging and avionics industries. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
