THERMO KING INTRODUCES THE FIRST TRANSPORT REFRIGERATION SYSTEM WITH ZERO OZONE DEPLETION POTENTIAL

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo King Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer of transport refrigeration equipment, is introducing new transport refrigeration systems that use refrigerants with zero ozone depletion potential. This is an environmental first for the trucking industry. The new Thermo King Zer-O(TM) transport refrigeration systems use both HFC-134a and HP-62. The two refrigerants cover the entire temperature range used by the refrigerated trucking industry.
Because of chlorine's unfavorable effect on the ozone layer, the manufacturing of CFCs will be prohibited worldwide after Jan. 1, 1996. The Zer-O systems do not use chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and contain no chlorine, the agent responsible for ozone depletion. In addition, Thermo King Zer-O transport refrigeration systems also do not use HCFCs, another common type of transitional refrigerant that also contains chlorine.
DuPont developed the chlorine-free hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) compounds with a 0.00 ozone depletion rating while Thermo King provided the technological expertise required to adapt HFC-134a and HP-62 for use in transport refrigeration equipment.
"With the current legislation banning CFCs, we thought it best to find a refrigerant that won't ever be legislated off the road," Thermo King President Jim Watson said. "The Zer-O transport refrigeration systems are better for the environment than compromise HCFC refrigerants. Thermo King is the industry leader and the Zer-O system is the solution we want to offer our customers."
The Zer-O transport refrigeration systems are now available in limited quantities and production will be increased in 1994.
Both refrigerants have undergone extensive laboratory and field testing for the past three years. Thermo King has found that standard maintenance practices have been acceptable with both HFC-134a and HP-62.
"We do not recommend that customers go to the expense of converting existing units with CFC refrigerants. However, we will have retrofit kits which will allow users to convert existing systems at their option," Thermo King Product Marketing Manager Norm Spear said. "As sufficient refrigerant quantities become available, these kits will be offered through our authorized Thermo King dealers."
