THERMO INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS REPORTS RECORD SECOND QUARTER PROFITS

 WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) today reported that net income increased by 34 percent to a record $10.5 million, or 24 cents per share, on revenues of $140.4 million for the second quarter ended July 3, 1993, compared with net income of $7.8 million, or 18 cents per share, on revenues of $88.6 million for the second quarter of 1992.
 For the six-month period ended July 3, Thermo Instrument reported net income of $20.4 million, or 46 cents per share, on revenues of $290.2 million, compared with net income of $15.2 million, or 35 cents per share, on revenues of $173.4 million for the first six months of 1992.
 "Our strategy of addressing the broad analytical instrument market by a combination of technological acquisitions and internal product development has continued to serve us well," said Arvin H. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Instrument. "For the near future, our efforts will place emphasis on improving the operating margins of the units we have acquired within the past year."
 Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory- based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
