THERMO INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS AWARDED $2.4 MILLION CONTRACT TO CONTINUE PLUTONIUM CLEANUP OF JOHNSTON ATOLL

WALTHAM, Mass., Sept. 14, /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Instrument Systems Inc. (AMEX: THI) announced today that its Thermo Analytical Inc. subsidiary has been awarded a two-year, $2.4 million contract by the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) to continue operations of a plutonium- contaminated-soil cleanup plant.
Two other Thermo Instrument subsidiaries, Eberline Instrument Corporation and Thermo Consulting Engineers, will provide support to Thermo Analytical. The plant is located on Johnston Island, about 700 miles southwest of Honolulu.
In August 1990, Thermo Analytical was selected by DNA to develop and operate a soil-processing plant that removes radioactive plutonium and americium contamination from soil. Working with DNA scientists, Thermo Analytical developed this unique, nondestructive process and has successfully remediated over 20,000 metric tons of soil, reducing by 98 percent the volume of soil requiring costly disposal. The new contract is to continue operation of the plant to complete the remediation of an estimated 100,000 metric tons of soil.
"With radioactive soil disposal fees increasing to more than $1,000 per cubic yard, use of this process at other sites to reduce the volume of contaminated soil will significantly decrease the overall cost of remediation," said Dr. John P. Appleton, president of Thermo Analytical. "We believe this cost-effective process can be used at many radiologically contaminated sites awaiting cleanup by public agencies and private owners."
Thermo Instrument Systems develops, manufactures, and markets analytical instruments used to detect and monitor air pollution, radioactivity, complex chemical compounds, and toxic metals and other elements in a broad range of liquids and solids. The company also provides environmental science and engineering services, laboratory- based testing, and nuclear health physics services. Thermo Instrument Systems is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO).
