THERMO ELECTRON'S PETER BROTHERHOOD TO PROVIDE MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN
EQUIPMENT FOR LANDFILL GAS POWER SYSTEM IN U.K.
WALTHAM, Mass., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO) today announced that its wholly owned Peter Brotherhood Ltd. subsidiary has received a second major equipment order for the BFI Packington Limited waste site near Coventry, England, where gas from decomposing refuse is used to generate electricity. Combined with another contract awarded in March, the value of the orders is approximately $2.5 million.
Under the new order, Peter Brotherhood will provide a rotary-screw compressor package valued at nearly $500,000 that will compress gas produced from the decomposition of refuse, allowing it to be burned to generate electricity for the national grid. Earlier this year the subsidiary was awarded a contract to manufacture an 8-megawatt steam turbine, valued at nearly $2 million, for the site.
The design of the site includes a network of more than 100 wells that gather methane-rich gas produced as waste decomposes. A pipeline carries the landfill gas to a power station, where it is cleaned and treated to fuel a gas turbine. The new equipment being supplied by Peter Brotherhood will allow the facility to increase its electrical output by recovering waste heat and by
raising the gas pressure to the level required for a boiler. The steam turbine generator is scheduled for delivery by year-end, and the compressor package is scheduled for delivery in January 1993.
"The landfill site operated by BFI Packington is considered a model for environmentally sound management of waste in the European Community, so we are especially pleased to receive a second significant order for this installation," said Marshall J. Armstrong, Thermo Electron vice president.
Peter Brotherhood Ltd., based in Peterborough, England, manufactures precision equipment including steam turbines for industrial and shipboard power generation, gas compressors for the petrochemical industry, and specialized process equipment for the production of chemicals, sugar, food, and paper.
Thermo Electron develops, manufactures, and markets environmental and analytical instruments, custom-engineered and pre-packaged cogeneration systems, industrial process equipment, biomedical materials and products, and fabricated biomedical and aerospace components. The company also provides metallurgical heat treating, water quality engineering, and analytical laboratory services.
