THERMEDETEC ANNOUNCES RECORD SALES OF DETECTION SYSTEMS
WOBURN, Mass., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermedeTec Inc., a wholly

owned subsidiary of Thermedics Inc. (AMEX: TMD), increased shipments of drug- and explosives-detection systems by more than 200 percent in 1991.
ThermedeTec sold 56 units for the year ended Dec. 28, 1991, compared with a total of 18 units in the previous year. Revenues exceeded $11 million, more than twice the revenues from last year.
ThermedeTec's EGIS(R) explosives-detection system is currently in use at 15 international airports in nine different countries worldwide. EGIS has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to detect trace amounts of dangerous explosives, including plastics such as the Semtex that is believed to have caused the mid-air explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The system is also being used by various foreign governments as a state-of-the-art weapon to fight the threat of terrorist bombings.
The company's Sentor(R) drug-detection system was introduced for commercial sale in 1991. Now being used by several foreign governments, the Sentor systems are aiding security officials in the successful interdiction of illegal drugs such as cocaine and heroin.
Thermedics develops, manufactures, and markets biomaterials, biomedical products, analytical instruments, and explosives- and drug- detection devices, and provides analytical laboratory services. Thermedics is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
