NEWHALL - Once upon a time, an evil witch cast a spell on a medieval kingdom, rendering the king mute and leaving his devious wife in charge of all the land.

 drama department's comic rendition of the familiar story of the princess and the pea titled ``Once Upon a Mattress Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy that opened off-Broadway on May 11, 1959, and then moved to Broadway. Jonathan Bermudez plays the silent king, and Katie Hart plays the queen searching for a suitable bride for her son, played by Scott Drapeau. None of the candidates are able to pass her test for royal eligibility, until Princess Winnifred, played by Kendahl Feldman, arrives.

Other cast members include Ever Fecske, Robert Nathanson, Krystle Futrell, Evan Staples and Carl Kanowsky.

Under the direction of drama teacher Julie Cohn, ``Once Upon a Mattress'' tells the story of royal courtship and comeuppance come·up·pance

``Once Upon a Mattress'' will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and again on Feb. 22 and 23, in the Hart Auditorium, 24825 Newhall Ave., Newhall. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students, and $3 for children ages 12 and under. Call (661) 259-7575.
