THERE'S A SPRING IN THEIR STEP; HART, SAUGUS SWIM COACHES EXPECTING MEMORABLE SEASONS.

Byline: Lee Barnathan and Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writers

Spring doesn't arrive on the calendar for a month and a half. But around Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, , the season has begun.

Monday was the start of the second semester for area high schools, and numerous spring sports have begun sixth-period practices. The games will begin as early as March 3.

Here is your first look at some of the athletes who might make headlines in their sports:

Swimming: Saugus coach Jan Tavares and Hart's Steve Neale are making big-time claims.

Tavares says USC-bound Heather Boylan is ``the greatest athlete to come out of this valley. No kid has ever won five individual CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  titles, so by that alone, she's the greatest athlete to ever come out of this valley.''

Neale said his boys' team is so deep, ``I think we'll be a nationally ranked team.''

Boylan has won individual titles and will try to add to her list in the 500 freestyle and 200 backstroke.

A trio of Hart boys will lead the Indians. Junior Anthony Ervin Anthony Lee Ervin (born May 26, 1981 in Burbank, California) to a white mother and a black father, is an American swimmer who won the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Freestyle at the 2000 Summer Olympics, finishing with the same winning time as Gary Hall Jr.  already has qualified for the U.S. Senior National meet in the 200 freestyle, clocking 1 minute, 38.7 seconds, making him one of the fastest 16-year-olds in the nation.

Junior Ryan Parmenter is a versatile freestyle swimmer, and junior Jon Terwilliger is a top backstroker and individual medley swimmer.

Boylan is the best-known swimmer on the Centurions squad. Also returning is junior Victoriana Donnelly, the defending Foothill League 200 backstroke champion, junior breaststroker Heather Cessna and sophomore backstroker Lindsay O'Neill. Tavares also is high on freshman Christina O'Neill as a freestyle sprinter and breaststroker.

Hart's boys also received a boost from Swiss exchange Swiss Exchange

student Christian Kneppeck, who is a member of his country's junior national team, in the individual medley and 500 freestyle.

Hart's girls have Alena Henrich, bound for UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , swimming the breaststroke, the 500 freestyle and the individual medley. She holds the school's 500 freestyle record and finished third in the Southern Section meet last year.

Also returning are Elizabeth Frick, who is considering swimming at Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame , in the breaststroke, where she was fourth in the section last year; and freshman Christina Castellano in the backstroke and individual medley.

Saugus' boys have a strong sophomore in Devin Hyfield, who surprised Terwilliger and Matt Reisman in winning the league 200 backstroke.

Baseball: Hart lost the FoothillLeague to Burroughs last year and will try to get it back with several talented players. Outfielder Chris Wright Chris Wright may refer to:
  • Chris Wright (cricketer), of Middlesex County Cricket Club
  • Chris Wright (footballer), of Boston United F.C.
  • C.W. Anderson, wrestler
  • Chris Wright, founder and chairman of Chrysalis Group, a UK media company.

A pair of pitchers, left-handed Andy Davidson Andy Davidson may refer to:
  • Andy Davidson (footballer) (b. 1932), Hull City appearance record holder
  • Andy Davidson (footballer born 1878), Middlesbrough, Bury, Grimsby and Southampton footballer
  • Andy Davidson (game designer)
and right-handed Jamie Shields, also look promising at this point. Watch out for Marke Horvat, who might have the same talent as brother Eric, now at Cal State Northridge.

Saugus looks strong on the mound, with left-hander Justin Babin impressing other coaches besides Doug Worley. But the Centurions return just one starter from last year in shortstop Ryan Sage. Worley said he's never returned so few starters in his previous 20 seasons.

Three others with experience will be counted on: first baseman/pitcher Travis Ivey, infielder/pitcher Luke Miller and pitcher/infielder Ron Clark This article is about the American teacher. For the baseball player, see Ron Clark (baseball player).

Valencia catcher Brady Burrill is probably the top backstop around.

Coach Al Weil, now in his 13th season, also welcomes back Stanford-bound shortstop Christina Chao, a two-sport athlete who sat out the remainder of the basketball season after suffering a shoulder injury earlier this year. For Saugus, 1996 Southern Section Division II champ and a semifinalist in 1997, this season's team will be young but still experienced. All sophomores but one earned a letter last year and will join two seniors in the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

At Canyon, the Cowboys are welcoming a new head coach in George Bustos, also an assistant coach for the Panthers Gold travel softball team. Bustos said his lineup won't be ready until Feb. 16 and at this point, ``nobody's on the team - every one tries out again to give newcomers an even shot.''

Boys' tennis: Valencia coach Annie Kellogg said she looks forward to coaching a more confident and more competitive team this season. Now in their fourth year, the Vikings return seven letter winners, including seniors Charlie Kasenge, Ephraim Torres and John Guirgus. Last year the team recorded a 7-13, 1-9 mark, collecting its sole league win against Canyon.

``This year, I'd like to see them play together confidently,'' Kellogg said. ``We now have seniors who started out as freshmen on the team. It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Meanwhile, Canyon will try to bounce back from a 1997 season filled with close losses. Last year, the Cowboys lost four league matches by a total of four points, including two 9-9 matches that were decided in games. Bob Gravett, now in his 21st consecutive season as the Cowboys coach, welcomes back six returners - seniors Brian White Brian White may refer to:

French was drafted out of college by Saskatchewan (9th overall) in 2001.
.

For Hart, senior Sar Doad is back and is expected to head the lineup, while Andrew Davidson - a two-time all-league selection as a doubles player - is a strong candidate for the No. 2 spot. Last year, the Indians claimed second place in the league behind Burbank, winner of the last 11 Foothill League championships. Coach Chris Mansfield, head of the program since 1979, also welcomes returners Josh Fradkoff and Mike Ho.

Golf: Hart remains the top program and will be led by Charlie Smith, bound for UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
. Junior Ryan Wyman, junior Jesse Honea and senior Jeff Voelker also should do well.

Canyon has J.R. Morton, who shot a 3-under-par 58 last year.

Boys' volleyball: Canyon might have the strongest returning player in Jimmy Giordano, but Saugus has the best group of returners and has its sights set on winning its first league title.

Three-year setter Dave Van Duzee returns and will be setting to middle blocker Matt Bradley, who had 30 kills in a match once last year, three-year varsity player Tom Hilton and ambidextrous ambidextrous /am·bi·dex·trous/ (am?bi-dek´strus) able to use either hand with equal dexterity.

am·bi·dex·trous

Able to use both hands with equal facility.
 Jeff Steele.

Canyon has Giordano back from last year's league championship team as well as junior Cody Evans, who played sparingly last year. A project that could pay off is junior Scott Ricks, who stands 6-foot-6.

Girls' track and field: Canyon, two-time defending league champion, is aiming for a third consecutive title with the help of distance runner Lauren Fleshman, who competed in the two-mile race in last year's state championship. During the 1997 cross country season, Fleshman also placed second in the Southern Section Division I tourney, second in the state championship, and second in the western national championship en route to earning All-American honors.

Jasmine Cetrone, both a runner and hurdler, will continue to be a versatile contributor. Jumper Emma Barker also is back, along with thrower Wendy McNeal and Danielle Wenz, perhaps the area's top pole vaulter.

Hart, under first-year coach Jeff Gilke, will look to improving its second-place league finish last year with the help of returning sprinters Edwina Vaiaoga and Randy Killian, both seniors. Leigh Carlson, school record-holder in the pole vault, is back as well. She also is expected to compete in the triple jump and high jump. In distance, the top runner is freshman Whitney Phillips, who led this school year's cross country team at No. 1.

Boys' track and field: Aaron Thompson - hailed by third-year coach Paul Broneer as last year's best athlete on the Canyon team - returns as a senior. Last season he competed in the high jump, sprint relay, quarter-mile race and hurdles. (His best time in the 300-meter hurdles was 41.0 seconds.)

Other top returners include sprinter Bryan May, discus thrower Vince LeDonne, jumper Ben Boyd, pole vaulter Josh Gittersonke, shot putter Josh Kelley and Derwin Mawell, the 1997 frosh/soph league champ in the triple jump.

Hart, which handed Canyon its only loss last season, is fairly young this year and will rely on its sophomores and juniors for depth. The senior group includes sprinter Dimi Watson and distance runners Chris Davis and Trevon Wilson. Top thrower Brent Benaway also returns. Hurdlers Matt Wilson, Chris James and Brian Terry also look to be strong this season.
