Cunard is credited by many industry representatives with pioneering the theme cruise, offering the first mystery cruises on which a "murder" was staged and passengers acted either as suspects or detectives, trying to ferret out the "murderer."

Now, Sail With the Stars, a Woodland Hills tour company, has built a business around lining up television, movie and sports stars with whom cruise passengers can mingle on cruises aboard Carnival, Holland America and Crystal ships, said Raina Ring, the firm's owner.

"We really allow passengers an opportunity to fulfill a fantasy, meeting their favorite stars," she said. "It's almost as if the celebrities are their friends for a week."

This year, Cunard has more theme cruises planned than ever before. Some of the most unusual: a murder mystery with a retired Scotland yard Scotland Yard, headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police.
