THE WRITING ON (AND OFF) THE WALL WORM TURNS AMID DOUBTS.

Byline: TOM HOFFARTH

LONG BEACH - Dennis Rodman had every intention to bang some tattooed bodies around during his first practice session with the American Basketball Association's Long Beach Jam on Jam On is a Jam Bands radio station on Sirius Satellite Radio channel 17 and Dish Network channel 6017. ``My record speaks for itself,'' Rodman said when a crush of media types practically pinned him to a wall and asked why anyone shouldn't be skeptical about this latest cry for attention (careful not to bring up his role on ``Celebrity Mole: Yucatan'').

His record - aside from what the Newport Beach Police Department has on file - means seven rebound titles, five championship rings and two All-Star Game appearances in a 14-year NBA career that seemed over after an aborted attempt to play for the Dallas Mavericks in 2000, a year after the Lakers employed him for a rocky month.

``There's nothing to be skeptical about because it's not like we're throwing $20 million at him to play for us,'' said Jam coach Earl Cureton, who left the Detroit Pistons in 1986, which opened a roster spot for you-know-who.

Chase notes that ``we've had zero negativity from the media or fans about this. It boils down to people either like him or want to like him. He remains a celebrity who people will always be intrigued by.''

Intrigue for the Jam translates to tickets sold. Rodman, who says he's about 75 percent healthy with a physical due Monday, expects to play in the team's next two games Friday night and Sunday afternoon at the Long Beach State Pyramid. Expect to see Rodman's new No. 91 jerseys on sale, too.

The grand plan, according to Rodman's handlers, is to get him back in an NBA tank top by the league's All-Star break in mid-February. But before then, the Jam's schedule calls for two games at Las Vegas on Jan. 20-21.

``That'll be a test for his sobriety,'' Chase admitted.

Michelle Rodman, officially married to him since May, remained optimistic.

``He's made a complete turnaround,'' she said. ``You don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

As bad as he might want to be, it's good to know someone still accepts him for all his piercing faults.
