It's no news flash he'll be named the Lakers' play-by-play guy this week.

Nor is it a front-page headline he's only going to get a one-season deal. That's for several reasons.

will always go the least expensive route, which means not only using Sunderland, who proved to be a fan-acceptable substitute for Chick Hearn during that three-month stretch last season, but sticking with the stupid ol' simulcast.

Two, this also affords the team some time. It needs to figure out whether: a) Sunderland is really the long-term replacement, b) two sets of broadcasting teams are vital considering the new network setup (it's only a simulcast for the regular season, and radio only for playoffs), and most interesting, c) any up-and-comer (i.e.: a minority male or female) could pop up who might be a better fit with the team's diverse ethnic base. ...

Did the Dodgers have an out to waste in a game they ``desperately need to win'' (in the words of Vin Scully)?

Was keeping the sometimes-shaky Schuey in the game that vital?

OK, so in the bottom of the seventh, Schuey strikes out the No. 8 hitter, then Tracy brings in Jesse Orosco to get the next two lefties.

OK, so it all works out. But it's sure fun to play along, isn't it?
