Smyth has been practicing with Ed Masterson, chairman of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. Chamber of Commerce, who will be behind the plate today to catch the mayor's pitch. Masterson said he has faith in his battery mate. ``He's pretty good; I've had to let my hand cool down after we warmed up,'' Masterson said. ``I'd say he's over the plate about 82 percent of the time.'' Smyth says he is looking forward to throwing that pitch across home plate, but the honor goes beyond the actual pitch, he said. ``It's great to be able to throw out the first pitch at a major league game like this, but when you're representing a great community like Santa Clarita, that's the biggest honor,'' he said.
