THE WHITE HOUSE 200TH ANNIVERSARY COIN
TO HELP PRESERVE THE HISTORIC PUBLIC ROOMS
WASHINGTON, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Mint today announced that the 1992 White House 200th Anniversary Coin is available and may be ordered at pre-issue discount prices through Aug. 28, 1992, while supplies last.
"The White House 200th Anniversary Coin honors a magnificent home and the great Americans who shaped history within its walls," said David J. Ryder, acting director of the Mint. "This silver dollar will play an important role in the preservation of a national treasure."
Authorized by Congress, this silver dollar coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of the laying of the White House cornerstone. A $10 surcharge included in the price of each coin will be paid to The White House Endowment Fund to maintain the historical public rooms of the White House and to support the White House Collection of fine art and historic furnishings.
Each year, nearly 1.5 million people tour the White House to view its historic rooms, fine art and furnishings. More than a tourist attraction, the Executive Mansion is a symbol of America's unique democratic heritage.
The popularity of its historic public attractions -- the East, Green, Red and Blue Rooms, the State Dining Room, and the Diplomatic Reception Room -- underscores the need for their preservation.
According to Public Law 102-281, no more than 500,000 silver dollar coins, available in proof and uncirculated versions, will be issued -- the lowest authorized mintage for a commemorative silver dollar in nearly a century. In addition, the proof version of the coin is the first proof commemorative silver dollar to carry the "W" mink mark of the West Point Mint. The uncirculated version of the coin will be struck at the U.S. Mint in Denver.
The obverse of the coin, designed by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver Edgar Z. Steever, IV, depicts the north portico of the White House with "1792-1992" inscribed above, and "In God We Trust" inscribed below. "The White House" is inscribed around the top border of the coin, and "Liberty" at the bottom center.
The reverse of the coin, designed by U.S. Mint Sculptor/Engraver Chester Y. Martin, features a bust of James Hoban, the original architect of the White House, and the main entrance he designed. "James Hoban" is inscribed beneath the bust, with "United States of America" around the top border, and "One Dollar" centered below. "E Pluribus Unum" appears at right.
The White House 200th Anniversary Coin is available at pre-issue prices of $28.00 for the proof version and $23 for the uncirculated version through Aug. 28. Thereafter, the proof version of the coin will be sold for $32, and the uncirculated version for $28, while supplies last.
