THE WESTIN HOTEL, SEATTLE TO HOST ENVIRONMENTAL SEMINAR
SEATTLE, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Westin Hotel, Seattle said today it will host the Green Lights lighting upgrade workshop on Aug. 27 - 28 for 30 participants including US WEST NewVector, The Boeing Co. and Nike.
Green Lights is a voluntary program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that encourages businesses to use energy-efficient lighting in an effort to reduce energy consumption and air pollution.
The Lighting Services Group was established to provide technical support to Green Lights participants throughout the lighting upgrade process. The group conducts monthly workshops for Green Lights participants interested in sharpening their lighting fundamentals.
The Seattle workshop will include sessions on lighting technologies and terminology, implementation planning, financing, waste disposal and lighting maintenance. The Lighting Services Group will also introduce the Decision Support System (DSS), a computer software program which assists users in analyzing existing systems and recommends the best upgrade package.
According to the EPA, participants commit to upgrading and retrofitting current lighting systems where it is profitable and where lighting quality is improved. Although the initial cost of upgrading technology is high, companies project significant increases in long-term savings.
Westin Hotels & Resorts is a pioneer member of the Green Lights program, having joined as a corporate partner in April of 1992. Retrofitting is under way in each of Westin's 50 U.S. and Canadian properties. Gus Newbury, director of engineering for Westin Hotels & Resorts, said, "Westin plans to save $1.5 million in 1992 by reducing energy consumption in its hotels."
The Westin Hotel, Seattle has retrofitted over 75 percent of its facility. "The hotel now saves approximately $4,000 per month in lighting charges," said Will Williamson, the hotel's energy manager.
By voluntarily joining the Green Lights program, Westin and other companies show their commitment to preserving the environment. "Westin takes its responsibility seriously as a corporate citizen in joining the effort to improve the environment," said Jim Treadway, president of Westin Hotels & Resorts, North America. "Green Lights represents another step in doing business in different ways that contribute to both energy conservation and the bottom line," he said.
