THE WEATHER CHANNEL EXPANDS RADIO NETWORK
NEW YORK, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Weather Channel cable network

has established The Weather Channel Radio Network(TM) to provide customized weather reports and local forecasts to radio stations throughout the U.S. Two major radio stations, WABC-AM New York and KVI- AM Seattle, have signed on as charter affiliates and began broadcasting the service earlier this month. The new network is being operated and represented by John T. Brady and Associates, a marketing and communications firm, said a spokesperson for the company.
According to Neal Jones, who oversees operations for The Weather Channel Radio Network, "The Weather Channel is the nation's leading brand name in weather, and this service will have a high perceived value among stations and their listeners. The Weather Channel is also closely identified with cable television, and we feel the radio network will promote the value of cable wherever our reports are aired."
Jones said The Weather Channel Radio Network can provide stations with customized forecasts and feed them live, in some cases, or in a recorded format, with updates throughout the day.
The new weather service is available on a barter basis only. Radio station affiliates receive the live and recorded forecasts in exchange for commercial air time.
John Mainelli, WABC's operations/program director, is impressed with the quality of forecast reporting and that 65 broadcast meteorologists are working around the clock to deliver accurate and timely local weather reports. Mainelli added, "The Weather Channel data provides WABC with the highest level of credibility with our listeners and the most authoritative weather reports in the New York market. The Emergency Storm Watch coverage of Hurricane Andrew was outstanding."
Television cross promotion is included as part of the network's affiliation program. Each station will be identified several times daily on The Weather Channel as an official local source for The Weather Channel forecasts.
According to Jones, for more than a year the Weather Channel has provided forecasting services to selected radio stations across the country. "With their input of what radio stations need in a forecasting service, we're now ready to launch a strong customer-oriented network with Brady & Associates," he said.
The Weather Channel is television's only 24-hour weather network and can be seen in 52 million homes nationally. It is owned by Landmark Communications, Inc., a Virginia-based media company with nationwide operations in publishing, broadcasting, and television programming.
