THE TURNER CORPORATION REPORTS A 10.5 PERCENT INCREASE IN 1992 NEW CONTRACT AWARDS

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Turner Corporation (AMEX: TUR), the nation's leading general builder today announced 1992 new contract awards of $3.1 billion. This represents a 10.5 percent increase over 1991 new contract awards of $2.8 billion. Building markets showing the greatest growth were hospital and healthcare, which increased 45 percent from $738 million in 1991 to over $1 billion in 1992, and education, which registered a 33 percent rise to $498 million in 1992 from $300 million the previous year. The increase in 1992 contract awards also was helped by significant awards in the public and research and development building markets.
In the hospital and healthcare field, where Turner has been ranked number one construction manager or general contractor by a Modern Healthcare magazine survey for the past seven years, Turner secured an $81 million project for New England Medical Center in Boston, an $85 million addition to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago and a $150 million facility for Palo Alto Veterans Hospital in California. Major awards in the biotech/pharmaceutical field included the company's second project for Genzyme in the greater Boston area and a new research and development facility for Ethyl Corporation in Richmond, Va. Other awards include five separate contracts with American Airlines and a contract with the Cleveland Public Library for construction of a main library and business and science building.
In commenting on the new sales figures, Turner President, Harold J. Parmelee, said "We are always happy to see increased sales, but it is particularly gratifying to achieve the rise in what is considered a slow market. I think it is a measure of Turner's versatility, flexibility and multi-faceted construction expertise that we have secured contracts in growing building market segments."
He continued, "Our 1992 new contract awards reflect America's renewed commitment to education, healthcare and research and development. We anticipate continued growth and recovery for the construction industry as a whole."
Based in New York City, the Turner Corporation, through Turner Construction Company and other construction subsidiaries, is the nation's largest builder of hospital and healthcare, commercial, industrial, institutional, retail, biotech/pharmaceutical, government building and multi-unit housing projects. Operating through more than 35 offices, Turner has construction projects underway throughout the United States and abroad.
